The essay film is a form that is for the most part, unknown to me. As far as expectations for the studio, I expect to analyse pieces from the style and experiment with my own filmmaking in a way I have yet to do. I chose this studio to explore the niche form, and because I am curious how these works can come to fruition and how they are created, which is different to a standard documentary format. I hope to learn how to develop an essay film with an opinion and explore the relationship between the content (such as the topic, dialogue etc) and the visuals. I find it interesting how similar essay films can be to documentaries, as well as how wildly different they can also be. Given I am not a fan of academic essays, I am eager to see my own response to this mode of expression, in which I can be more creative in my work than I could be in a standard written essay. I think the line between creativity and academia is often very clear, so I want to attempt to tap into both of those worlds with whatever pieces I create. I think a major thing for me is realising that not everything I make has to have some deeper meaning, and I can create works that simply surround things I am curious about or passionate about.
