Assignment 4: Week 9 Reflection

By the time we had reached week 9, we had a cast organised, a first draft of a script, ideas of where our locations would be and a timeline for where we wanted to be each week. We also had started to look at potential shooting days, as we were becoming more aware of the time restriction for getting the piece completed.

Throughout week 9, we focused a lot on the script and how to polish it off. Before beginning the editing of the first draft into a second draft, we completed a traffic light system of what we wanted to keep (green), what was good but needed tweaking (yellow) and what we thought we could scrap (red). Once this was done, I had some idea of where we wanted the script to go, and with Nia’s help, I wrote a second draft, then a third, and then eventually we reached a final script after a lot of small changes. One big change was abandoning a storyline on around the 3rd draft, as we did not see a way to fit it in smoothly and within the timeframe we had set. From the experience of writing up the scripts, I learnt that it was extremely tedious, and in future, I don’t think it is something that I would like to have a large responsibility over.

We also ran into a problem this week with casting. Some of the actors who had told us they were interested and available did not respond to any contact, so we had to start looking for replacements for those roles. Once we had changed some of the assigned cast members, we had to tweak the script once again to fit the new actors better.

Another major issue we faced this week was finding exact locations. We plan to film in the RMIT TV Studios, however, we were struggling to have any correspondence with the people who we needed to get into contact with. We were running out of available days to film, and if we did not organise a studio soon, we would have to rush to find another location. Regrettably, we had not thought of a backup location with the same sitcom apartment style we were looking for. Before the end of this week, we decided we needed to all consider a location for a backup just in case.
