As the theme remains to be Self Portrait, I decided to dig deeper into the concept of who I really am. I am very much of an night owl. I have been an nocturnal animal ever since I could remember. The night always charms me over with its noble glow of mystery. And I would feel much more alive when…

The Haiku Exercise
For the Haiku exercise, I used Premier Pro to edit, Garage Band to compose a simple BGM and Audition to edit the audio. This was actually my first time of using Garage Band to compose. Mostly I just used it to record singing & stuff. It was a great experience and I decided to make more music for the PB2…
Reflection & Further Improvement
This week’s work was mainly about how I feel and sharing an experience, touching base on what a self portrait is, but not specific and deep enough to show I kind of a person I am. I tried using audio to express myself for the first time and to my surprise, I enjoyed it. Still, my poem sucks but it…
Self Portrait – photographs
This photograph is one of my tarot reading I did for myself. I always seek for help from my tarot cards when I am lost. I have a very strong intuition so the reading is correct most of the time. This reflects that I believe in spiritual things and I have a special source of information that could assists me…
Self Portrait – audios
The first two are me singing a bit of Pure Imagination as it’s always been my favorite song from childhood to now. Every time I hear it I automatically think of the scene where Charlie and the other kids first enter the chocolate factory. The scene completely blew my mind and I love it to the moon and back. Also…
Self Portrait – 50 word text
http://ariawwwww.tumblr.com/post/158146983097/untitled So I wrote this song/poem for the 50 word text haha it’s really bad but I tried. I explored how I have been living my life and what the belief was that supported me through the hardest times. I tried to look at how I struggled with socializing and fitting in in a philosophical way. I always knew…
Self Portrait – videos
This is filmed from the balcony of where I live. I love the view haha. I always go there to get some fresh air. This video is a reflection of how I have been battling with my short lashes. I literally tried every single method that’s supposed to make them grow but they’re still the same. Even though now I…
Self Portrait- some thoughts & past artworks
So I did a brainstorm on how to do a self-portrait using multiple types of media. I am really familiar with this theme as I did something similar in high school as my final artworks for Year 12. At that time, I was suffering a minor depression so the artworks I made were about the pain I endured and…

In the article ‘Hyper and Deep Attention: The generational Divide in Cognitive Modes’ written by N. Katherin Hayles, we are introduced to the hypothesis that as networked and programmed media develop, people’s cognitive styles have significantly changed. Deep attention refers to the cognitive style that is characterized by concentrating on a single object for a long periods while Hyper attention refers to a cognitive style that is characterized by switching focus rapidly among different tasks. With the education system remaining largely the same, hyper attention is regarded as defective behavior that scarcely qualifies as a cognitive mode at all. If the shift in cognitive styles has been happening, then a group of people wouldn’t be able to fit the criteria.
Personally, I have hyper attention more than deep attention. And all my life, I have been living under the shadow of how deep attention is the preferred and more appreciated by the society and the education system. As a kid, I never liked sitting down and listening to what the adults said, I was always running around and making troubles. Later into early teenagehood, I failed to read and write and just sit in the classroom for the whole day. I was never a well-behaved student as I found what & how they taught was boring. And if I find something boring, I would waste no time on it. But everything became better after I got familiar with technologies. Mobile phones, the Internet, laptops. I found out that with more types of media assisting me, I learned much faster and better, and most of all, I enjoyed the learning. So I started to learn things that I truly loved, and the result was amazing. Then I came to the realization that I could be just as competent as others if I studied in my own way. I acquired many useful skills through multi-media and were very proud of them. But nothing much changed in my academia as the school still chose to teach students in the same old way.
Week#1 Lecture 01/03/17
In this lectorial, we started to build our understanding of the course and get to know what we need to do to complete the course. And I was startled at how many people there were in the auditorium haha.
Key info from the slides:
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Analyse and discuss media objects in terms of disciplinary frameworks.
- Analyse and evaluate your own learning styles.
- Explore and use a range of production technologies to make media.
- Reflect upon and explain your creative choices in individual and group contexts.
The course coordinator Brian suggested us not to do things until it’s nearly the deadline but to start early on things with what you’ve got in mind. The illustration was quite impressive to me because procrastination has always been one of my biggest worries.
By the end of this course, I’d like to:
- Gain more knowledge about media (its past, presence and future) and how it’s utilized to approach a better means of understanding & expressing ideas.
- Learn to use adobe softwares with more advanced skills, especially Premier Pro and After Effect. ( I did Studio Arts in high school and produced 2 short videos as my final artworks so I do have a sense of how to use the basic tools in Premier Pro and After Effect. But I have to get better at using them because I want to produce films that vary in types and lengths and be ready to collaborate with other filmmakers).
- Learn to be a better storyteller. The key point in here is to enhance my writing and communication skills as they are crucial to this course and my future career.
- Be more confident in what I make and how I make it.
- Build a social network that supports and inspires me which will assist & elevate me academically and personally.
In short, I can’t wait to get started on thinking, discussing, making, collaborating and most importantly, enjoying whilst having this course. The people I have encountered so far are very nice and spontaneous and aspire to make something different just like me. I take pleasure from sharing ideas with like-minded people so much and I look forward to more of it:)
