A Clip from Brideshead Revisited (2008)

The clip shows the bit where Charles is invited to Sebastian’s home to spend the summer together. The music is one of the themes called “Sebastian”, sounding mildly cheerful with a hint of melancholy, just like the character.

The quick cut of what they’ve done during the summer conveys the fleeting of good times, making the audience want their time together to last while subtly implying that when this song ends, when the summer ends, everything they’ve had will be gone. And it’s a fact that after this part, their relationship goes downhill. At 2:00, the joyful and dreamy atmosphere goes away as it comes to twilight, adding ambiguity to their relationship and a sense of possible danger is communicated to the audience.

The color scheme is quite interesting because Sebastian’s red pajama is the only warm color through out the clip, though there’s sunlight and the tonality in some shots appear to have a warm tint, but the majority of shots are relatively cold toned. The red color could emphasize Sebastian’s romantic and passionate personality and suggest that he is always the center of the crowd.

At the end of the film, the theme “Sebastian” comes up once again after their farewell, echoing the written-in-the-star tragedy of their relationship. With the song played at the climax and the cold end of the story, completely different feelings are evoked but somehow the hint of melancholy stays the same.
