Fact Check Brief
Does Australia have one of the highest loss of species than anywhere else in the world? The fact check story that we have chosen is related to climate change and the extinction of species in Australia. The article introduces us to the biodiversity of Australia, telling us how many species are unique to Australia and how Australia compares to other countries.

  • –  It also talks about the extinction of species, how do people and departments assess if species are extinct
  • –  Compares the number of extinction of species in Australia against the world. Australia ranks fifth in the number of extinct species, with the USA in first place with 266 extinct species.
  • –  The article also tells us what causes the extinction of species, also noting that Australia is a special case. As most animals are endangered due to rapid human growth and habitat loss, Australia does not fit into the criteria as most of Australia is largely natural.
  • –  It also mentions that the scientific community does not know what is causing these extinctions.
  • –  The article concludes by saying that Australia does have one of the highest loss of species than anywhere in the world.

    Reasons for choosing this story
We chose this story because we are passionate about this issue, as some of the causes of extinction, is also the causes of climate change, for example, Pollution. Climate change is a very big issue that more people need to be concerned about, and how it affects the world. We want to raise awareness on these issues, as more and more species are going extinct. For example, the Javan Rhino. A subspecies of Giraffe is also listed as endangered.

This article was written in 2015, and updated in 2016. Although this was 3 to 4 years ago, this issue is still ongoing, and nothing much has changed. We want to inform the audience that fact checks regarding these issues remain current for a long period of time as these issues are not easily solved.

    Target Audience
    Youths
Youths are the current generation that can make the most impact if they wanted to, as they span from ages 18 to 35. Today’s youth are also more cynical as compared to the previous generations.

Objective
We aim to educate the audience on fact-checking in order to aid them in doing their part to protect the earth and its species

Prototype
The format of our show is going to be similar to John Oliver’s talk show where there is one camera which is a close up on the presenter. The tone we are using for the show is satire and we are planning to build on it by using some props.
Here are some of the ideas and examples that we have come up with:

  • –  The presenter gets progressively agitated as they start to realise that people are not doing much to help
  • –  We can use soft toys to represent the species that are endangered and dying
  • –  “If all the species become extinct, us humans as a species would become extinct too.”
  • –  “The Office” type of camera work
  • –  Use of gifs and reaction images to further bring in the candidness of the show.

    Elements
We plan to include in an infographic video, voxpox and different reaction images to add on to the tone that we are going to adopt.

    Reasoning
Satire is able to promote critical thinking. Youths know that climate change is not a hoax, despite what some climate change deniers might say. Although there are some youths that are partaking in movements like the #strawban, it does not actually contribute to lessening the impacts of climate change. Youths need to start thinking about what contributes to climate change, for example, companies that greenwash themselves into being more environmentally friendly despite not actually changing their ways.

By incorporating satire into the show, we are able to invoke critical thinking within youths and therefore aid them in doing their parts in protecting the earth. We want youths to take action and thus create a better future.

We decided to use an infographic video to summarise the statistics within the article as it would get really dry and boring if the presenter were to just read out the stats without any visual aids. By visualising the numbers, the audience would be able to retain the information better.

reflective blog

The topic we have chosen is the extinction of species. It reminded me of a news story that I saw before, regarding the disappearance of Australia’s endemic species, the “Tasmanian Tiger”. The continent of Australia has species that is unique to the land. One of the reasons why there are so many unique land species in Australia is due to the separation of Australia from other continents. This caused the species to not be able to cross on to other continents, thus making Australia the sole possible habitat for them. Thus, making the protection of the species even more important in Australia. Preventing the extinction of species in Australia does not just affect the continent but also the rest of the world in order to preserve the diversity of species on earth. The study of Australian species has greatly contributed to the evolution of biology. With the help of the teacher, we have also made some changes to the plan. We originally hoped that social surveys will show people’s lack of knowledge about species, because we found that species disappeared in addition to environmental damage and natural accidents. For example, many families like to keep pets, however, if they were to release them back into the wild would cause an imbalance in the ecosystem. This is also the reason why the Australia’s customs strictly control the biological products. We maintain a satirical tone about how the show is presented, but we can add more emotional changes and gradual ways, such as the sudden darkening of the lights, the way the host enters, and the tone of speech. We also plan on including a voxpox and create an infographic video, because we found that there is a lot of data in the original text, such news will reduce the audience’s reading interest, what we need is to make the audience interested and to engage critical thinking. For species conservation, it should be the responsibility that everyone should give, regardless of the country’s territory and population.

Broadcasting is one of the main forms of traditional media. News activities are also the main area of public figure activities. We all know that public figures have great influence in media communication (for example, news). The social culture and social changes are also driven by public figures. Today’s media invites public figures to increase their influence, expand their popularity, and gain market share. This is an important means to bring the masses. As time progress, broadcast has become less relevant, it is necessary to produce high-quality programs and bring them closer to the masses and attract their attention and let people understand the content and expand the knowledge and impact they want to spread. In addition to mobile groups, students and other major groups, the target audience of broadcast media gradually expanded to include white-collar groups and housewives. With the help of listeners and public figures, the dissemination of information becomes practical. In present times, the transformation of contemporary media convergence has brought new opportunities and challenges to the media industry, and brought new problems to radio and television news education. Radio and television news education faces a single educational model, unable to meet the needs of new talents, the difference in professional quantity and teaching, the disconnection between teaching and practice, the lack of students’ practical skills, and the shortage of teachers. The impact of the Internet on traditional media and broadcasting is not only bring about the chaos of information, but also the stagnation of morality and information. If we hope that the field of broadcast news can continue to prosper, radio and television news education should update the educational concept and keep up with the times, and that the academic community will closely cooperate with the media industry to broaden the development of radio and television news education. From another aspect, public figures are also a new direction for the future of the broadcasting industry. Under the blessing of the Internet, our communication model has begun to transform into independent media and character media. The impact of one person is far greater than the influence of a previous news channel. We will also find that the direction of society has become more diverse and non-solidifying.

For the production of live shows, this is my first time participating. I am very grateful for the opportunity offered by the studio. I once imagined the interning in a tv studio, but the participation in this production gave me a lot of new experiences. I chose to take the role of the cameraman as I have never done it before. The camera is my childhood dream. When I watched TV shows, I always wondered about how can the flow of a program be so fast and smooth. When I walked into the control room, I faced rows of operation buttons only to realise that it was a complicated process. The birth of a program requires collaboration between members of the team. It is blend of experience that every team member brings to the table. There is a huge difference between program production and traditional movies. It is necessary to know the operation of each part in advance, because the recording of a live show is the result of a quick and efficient effort. If there is an issue in a certain part, it will affect the rest of the show. If the camera cannot capture the scene in time, a blank picture might appear. If the monitoring room does not adjust the playback of the screen in time, it will cause the awkwardness within the taping of the show. The sound control room also has irreplaceable importance, and the appearance of noise is also greatly affected. If our idea is to be converted into a mature program, it will take a long time to run and practice, because we never know what the taping of the show will be like, so the director and floor manager are the most important roles in the early stage of the team. The media programs and entertainment programs we watched on TV all have similar processes. There was someone who described the media programs is a result of rigorous division of labor and cooperation, like a miniature version of the human body or society. What we need to learn is not only the use of technology, but also the study of more academic studies, with social responsibility, program innovation and research is the direction we should adhere to after professional study.
