Feedback Reflection

Thanks for Hannah inventing Paul and Sophia came to our class, and also thanks for Paul and Sophia gave me the feedback of my Task three and four.

When I said I caught the movement of the Blue mountain, Sphoia motioned that she saw the light change of the pictures. In a natural environment, it doesn’t happen so many things. The change of the shadows and the patterns are because of the light.  Which makes me think about the light caused the movement. And I think for my bigger project in task four, I can more thinking about the changes of the light, does it makes people see the movement?

When Paul talks about what he thinks about the blue mountain, he thinks the blue mountain gives him a bad feeling. I guess that why different people will have different emotions in one particular location. And I think this is also what am I going to think about in Task Four.

For Task Four, I am going to explore more about How do people interpret the differences of seeing the movement by using photography and film? What the difference and similarity between our’s ideas.During the learning process of three Task, I guess I am not only learning about noticing, I am more studying the way of thinking and developing my ideas.

I write reflections under each experiment post, for this reflection post I am going to reflect the whole process of three experiments, and what I’ve learned during this process. The whole experiments are not just for intentional noting, it also draws attention to our part of everyday experience, it can help my personal further development. Also, base on John Mason’s reading, there are a lot of things we pass by, we notice that thing but we didn’t mark those things. It led me to notice more things that we don’t normally see, back to my question. In order to notice more things, we need to give a mark for those things, no matter if a picture, it a piece of voice…And what I learned in this process, sometimes we really need to spend the time to observe things around us, it leads me to notice what I am not already sensitized to and therefore change the way of my thinking. In Benning’s film, there has been an obsession with movement. It gives me an idea of noticing things happen in a natural environment.I want to explore more about “noticing in movement” between photography and film.

After I did the whole three experiment, I think I create the cycle of the process for noticing. I am trying to develop more things base on each experiment. And I think I learn a lot of things when I was doing Task three, it allows me to think more beyond than just noticing, in order, it kind of creates my development skill of thinking. We are always noticing stuff that around us, but I am now really interested in noticing movement. And I want to explore more about how do other people interpret my working of noticing movement.

Pitch

Hi, I am Nagini. Today I am going to present what I ‘ve noticed in my experiments. When I did Task Two, I need to list what I expect to notice in my pair’s location. When I compare what I really notice and what I expect to notice, I consider I am very sensitive to numbers and letters, which I didn’t realize before.

In order to answer this question, I need to go to someplace I really familiar with, I went to the Woolworth that close to my apartment, each 15 mins, I need to stand their use 1 mins to observe, and took one pic. I learned there are many things pass by in our life, we didn’t notice it because we didn’t mark it. However, I still catch a lot of number and letters in this busy city environment. If I put myself in a natural environment, what am I going to notice? So I went to the blue mountain, still 15 mins, I noticed a lot of movement in there, the birds, the wind passes through the sky. However, we I use photos to catch them, I only got still photography. Some photos can show the movement some can not. If I take a video and photos of a natural environment, what can I notice? Benning’s film gave me an idea, I chose skies as my third environment.

For my next bigger project, I want to explore more base on my third experiment. Still chose a natural environment that doesn’t have so many things happen, and record people’s thinking of seeing the photos and videos of movement.

Thanks!

In class discussed

Are you making patterns to notice new things or are there patterns out there in the world that you are trying to notice?

  • I am trying to notice the patterns out there in the world

Are you glimpsing in or observing slowly? What are the differences?

  • Long time, I need to use the time to really observe.

How is the medium (photography)you’re using to notice shaping what is available to be noticed in the media?

  • A photo can make thing still, rather video will make things stillness.

How is the particular technology you’re using(iPhone, DSLR) shaping what is available to be noticed?

  • If I am using the camera, maybe it could be more clearly or it could distract my though, cause too many details out there.
  • Anywhere, anytime, catch something before it gone

What does your media pay attention to ?

  • Movement
  • Patterns

Is there an art-work/media pieces/film that is like what you’re doing

-Benning’s film

Would you position what you are making as documentary, nonfiction, experimental or somewhere in between? Why?

  • Nonfiction and experimental
  • Mix photos and films, experimental combine all together to create something new

Task Three- experiment 3

when I face to one nature environment(like the sky), what different things I will notice between photos and films?

Place: a sunny day sky

Step:

  1. Using phone to take an hour sky film
  2. Using camera take one photo each 15 mins
  3. compare the differences between the pictures and the video

Media:

Reflection :

We I looked back to the video, even the sky is one thing, but it changes all the time. I use Time-lapse to shoot the sky, which gives me clearly a movement of the sky. From Benning’s films, Benning shoots long periods of time in order to see how the skies change and mutate. I did the same thing, however in the class, we will feel anxious about the long time watching the skies, it shows that we all expect to see something of the skies but nothing comes out, so I made my video to be fast in order to see how it change and mutate. I also take one photo each 15 mins. Although from the reading, Benning notes that because digital video can now capture perfect stillness it is almost best at capturing the stillness of the world because it can capture movement. I agree with that, however, I also think because photography makes stillness becomes still, so we can notice something more focus. We can really catch the movement of something happened. Like my photos, one of them, there is a bird in the photo, however, in the video, we didn’t notice that very clearly. When something happens, photos can catch the movement in that second, rather video will record the process of this moment.

Base on Benning’s films, there has been an obsession with movement. I want to explore more about “noticing in movement” between photography and film.

Task Three-Experiment 2

If I am in the natural environment, by using what I’ve learned in the first experiment, what I am going to mark in this environment ?

During the break, my friend and I will go to Blue Mountain in Sydney.

Location: Blue Mountain

Step:

It really similar to the first experiment, I am going to set an alarm

  1. set an alarm, each 5 mins will ring
  2. take one photo when the alarm is ringing.
  3. Don’t need to use one min to think about anything, just take the photo(different than experiment 1)
  4. re-see the photos

Reflection

During this experiment, I do not only see the beauty of the environment anymore, I am noticing the patterns out there.  I am noticing the pattern and shape of those leaves, catching the structure of mountain, seeing the shadow of an object, the comparison of the colors.  It makes me think about the narrative and non-narrative story, Frankham’s idea makes me think about using extra elements to reflect those picture. However, those photos can also reflect the movement of the natural environment,  photography makes movement still, so the only film can really notice stillness happening in the world. I only took photos when I was doing the last two task, I think it’s time to let me try the little video.  When I observe the natural environment, I can not catch the stillness from the photos,  only the film can catch that.

Refine

I am wondering when I face to one nature environment(like the sky), what different things I will notice between photos and films.

Task Three-Experiment 1

I am wondering I build a circle of noticing, I will write what I am going to notice and then go to the place notice, I notice more than what I expect to notice, I found out that I normally notice numbers in Task Two, How can I notice more things?

PICK UP A LOCATION That I know well.

I am going to go to the Woolworth that near my apartment.

Step 1. Set up an alarm – 5 mins

Step 2 Stop at the point and then use one min to see what you don’t know about this place before

Step 3. Taking picture

Reflection:

In our life, we can not notice everything, people notice things for good reason. According to Mason’s reading, “We need to be selective in order to survive. “This sentence really interested me as well. I understand that we will notice things we think it useful to ourselves, so I did this experiment to draw my attention to things pass us by. In those pictures, I recognized there are a lot of things I’ve missed. This experiment is not just for intentional noting, it also draws attention to our part of everyday experience, it can help my personal further development. A lot of things we pass by, we notice that thing but we didn’t mark those things. It led me to notice more things that we don’t normally see, back to my question. In order to notice more things, we need to give a mark for those things, no matter if a picture, it a piece of voice…This experiment tells me sometimes we really need to spend the time to observe things around us, it leads me to notice what I am not already sensitized to and therefore change the way of my thinking.

Refine

After this experiment, I went to the place that I familiar with. I still got a lot of “letters information”, I am thinking that if I go to someplace that I never been there before and their almost no letters information, what am I going to notice? If I am in the natural environment, by using what I’ve learned in the first experiment, what I am going to mark in this environment?
