Task Four-Reflection
When I did the first task, I didn’t realize that there is a whole process during this semester. I did Task one for noticing the things that I am really interested in, which is form, shape, color. And during the second Task, when I go to my pair’s location, I noticed a lot of things that I didn’t expect I will notice. To re-see those photos, numbers, and letters are coming up with my photos. Because of it happened, I was trying to find out, if I wasn’t in a big city environment, what can I notice. Then, the idea of movement starts coming up. At the beginning, I decided to explore more about how do other people interpret movement between photos and video. However, when I was doing the final project, I become increasingly aware of the connection between humans and nature.
I went to the place named Plenty Gorge Park, it is a very natural park. It is a very wild and quiet park. So I went to the park, set a 20 mins video, during this 20 mins, every 5 mins I need to take one picture. Lucky, there are a lot of things going on when I was shooting. Then, I back to my apartment, I started to re-watch what I shoot, when I really use the time to watch a natural environment, I was more focus on the patterns and rhythms in the natural rather just the tree, sky, clouds. And then, I ask one of my friends Angelina who doesn’t know anything about my project. I ask her three questions:
What did you notice?
Is there any difference of movement between photos and films?
Did you get bored?
She answered me, she does notice that there are a lot of things going on, the airplane, the trees fell down, the clouds. She thought the photos are more structuralizing, rather the film is more like a documentary. She also said that she got bored at the beginning, but then she started to think, there are so many things happened even just in a natural environment but she never realized before. When she said that, I kind of understand what my purpose of this project. Connect to our second-week reading, there are a lot of things going on in our life, we can give those things a connection. When I did the editing of video, I consider to compare the video and photos, I should put them together as one film, and this way can make audiences also clearly figure out the movement in my final project. To explore more, I think my Task four project is not only about movement, but also deeply about a social phenomenon. As more and more people in a big busy city environment, do people still observe the nature?
We always lost sight of the beauty near us, and I think by doing the whole process of noticing things, I see the unseen now. A lot of things pass through by our life, people normally do care about it, but by ignoring the things near you, you are losing something, whether it a beauty, it an opportunity, it an inspiration…. We should always be passionate about the things near us, that how we can see the unseen!
Task four- process 2 editing
I don’t think in my final project I will put the whole 20 mins video, I would like to do some editing to compare my photos and the video. I think I definitely will cut some part that doesn’t necessary to show to the audiences. Because it my final piece I will add some background music and my friend audio.
Class- discuss
- Second-week reading
I looked back our second weeks reading, I think it definitely has something that matches my project. What I am doing is that I try to make a connection between humans and oxygen, pollen, windmills. Actually, humans are also from nature, for my project, I am hoping other people who don’t have much time can through my project to observe the nature. We can all create a connection between humans and natural environments.
- do two ways of the finals
I am still thinking about it, weather should I put photos in the video, or just make it to the different piece. But maybe two different pieces will be better. Because what I want to explore is about two different media format.
Other things will be should I cut the video, or make it fast that it should be. Becuase 20 mins is too long for audiences to watch, or maybe I can put one 20 mins and one 5 mins?
- How can I expand the works through different media format
Through Alien’s reading, I think what I expand to see of my work is the relation of humans to nature. We always use much time in a busy environment, no matter is school, office… Do we really have time to see the nature around us? I hope my audiences can through my project see the connection in order to create a flow of humans and nature.
Task Four – Process1
I took one video and 5 photos. During this process, everything is uncorrectable. The most exciting moment is that I kind of see the relationship between wind, trees, and humans.
When I re-see the video and photos, I realized during 20 mins, there are a lot of things happened even in a natural environment that wouldn’t happen so many things. In a busy environment, we have too many things that around us. We are more working rather than observe the things that around us. I feel very happy to really use the time to sit down and have a look for our beautiful environment. It makes me calm down.
Task four – Friend discuss
Since I need an audio of my final piece, I am so glad I invented my friend Angelina Li as my interviewer. But before I record the audio, we just watch my two media formats together and have a discussion about it. However, because of the time limit, I did an edit of my piece video and have a soft background music of my piece.
Both Angelina and I think it definitely has huge differences between photos and videos for catching movement. As different people have the different perspective of notice, rather than me, Angelina thinks that video definitely catching the movement of the natural environment, the winds, the tree even the sun. Photos are more likely give people strong senses when you see those photos. So, for the next step, we are going to record the audio.
I am still thinking that in my final piece, I may going to use this video, which is 5 mins. On the one hand, 20 mins maybe too long for the viewers and as we discuss in class, it may make audiences feel bored, On the other hand, because the purpose of my project it to talks about the movement, I do want people to see the movement and compare to the photos. But I am still thinking about that…
Task Four: planning the recipe
From what I’ve done in Task three, I think I quite have a clear idea about what I am going to do for the final task of this semester. I think I am still going to explore the movement in the natural environment. I want to research and analysis this idea id because I find the interested about how does nature move. When I did Task three, I really use the time to observe the nature, which I wouldn’t normally do. Task Four, I am going to ask other people’s interpretations of the movement in the natural environment. Thus, this process will help me of noticing the world better.
- The Big things were:
- Go to a natural environment alone
- Using a long time to record and observe nature
- Finding the movement in nature
- The Littler things
- Using camera to record the movement
- Find good view of the natural environment
- Ask friends to talk about what their thinking, and record those thinking.
The Timeline will help me and remind me about what am I going to do in the next several weeks. For this time, the work is not about school, teacher, I think I feel freer and really put this work to myself. Like I am going to explore the whole idea. And the timeline will also help myself to remember what I will do, and reflect them a little bit.
Task Four – Prompt
For the final project, I am still going to explore the movement in a natural environment, but this time it not about what I notice between photos and film, it more about how do other people notice the differences and similarities between photos and films about movement.
- Location: Plenty Gorge Park
- shooting 20 mins in two different places in the park
- During each 20 mins, each 5 mins take one photo
- ask 2-3 people watched the videos and photos I take
- Questions to ask them
- what did you notice?
- Do you see any differences and similarities between photos and videos? What is that?
- Do you find any things that interest or confuse you?
- record other people’s thinking
- From the different perspective of noticing movement, what can I learn through this process?
