Food on Film – Week 3
In the space between ages, directed by Travis Lee Ratcliff, follows sculptor Dony Mac Manus who rejects contemporary art in favor of a return to the ideals of the renaissance. In this film, it has expository modes and both performative modes for me. When I start to watch it, the more I began to listen to Dony talk about his thinking of culture, arts and freedom, the more I found myself intrigued by the film’s name In the space between ages. This film defiantly emerges a person’s art life story rather than an artist story. Which inspired me about my project, my project also could be a person’s memory and the story of one traditional food in her hometown, rather than how Chinese international student feeling Chinese food. Nichols (2017) argues that documentary represents our experience of the world, it could draw our attention more than others. (p209) The passion of understanding a person who has a multicultural background will lead me to make and achieve my film.
Travis said “In both our documentary and narrative work we are committed to what we call a process-oriented methodology. This philosophy takes an explorative approach to our filmmaking process and the stories we tell. “In the case of my film, I don’t want to direct audiences’ experiences, I would like to allow them to invent to it, discuss with it, and explore of it. The interviews in the films including several places, there are all important parts of Ireland where Dony grew up. Different places bring audiences not to get tired or bored with the film, and each place will have a different meaning for the subject. With the voice over, the change of the location will lead audiences to understand the follow with the story. On the other hand, this is a non-linear film, but the images of what he makes and the clips of he is making a sculpture gives me a strong feeling of why this film is named in the space of ages, the way Dony comprehends arts is different than others in current ages. A good topic is really important since I still don’t have a good topic of my film, I think I will wait to the doing process of it, so myself will have a better understanding of my work. But I plan to use images and shoot some important location part of my interviewee. Technically, the sound effects of this film give a special experience, it likes I am watching a high-quality movie. The sound is actually an important part of every media works. It will give audiences a sense of interact with your work, the volume of different soundtracks will bring audiences a different sense of one clip. In my work, I think I will have some clips of my interviewee makes food, I will pay attention to the audio of those footages.
Finally, I really suggest anyone who likes both documentary and arts to see this film, it is a great and unique piece!
