Week 12’s class was generally the group discussion. The idea had been basically established that we would interpret the ‘online friend’ observation written by Lyreca. At the beginning, four of us achieved the agreement to focus on the awkwardness of a real-life catch-up and to compare it with the online chatting. Neville was doing his own interpretation which was based on the same piece and he was willing to help our group. Then, Jackson also showed interests, so we ended up in a group of six.

I was very glad that my idea (not showing the identity of the online friend) was appreciated by other group members, and we started to brainstorm what shots could we use to present the friend in their catch-up. One certain idea was to the extreme close-up of the mouth, indicating the endless talking and the main talent’s awkwardness. Based on this, we reckoned it was a good point to have other detailed close-up shots of the friend’s clothing, earring or hands. It could work to show the main talent’s observation because it is their first meeting in the real life. Another certain idea was the usage of voice-over. Our first initial idea was to only film from one perspective, maybe the third-person which places the camera behind the friend to catch the expression of the main talent, so the internal monologue could effectively cooperate to tell the story. By combining the two centred opinion, we decided to do the reverse shot, one perspective focuses on the main talent’s face and another one focuses the small details of the friend talent. The final outcome enriched the visual effect and prepared for the gossip happened at the ending.

Narratively, Lyreca mentioned that this girl (the friend talent) was actually her ex’s friend. All of us reckoned this was interesting to develop some drama to end the conversation. Aria came up with the idea that the friend talent could mention the name of the ex and at that moment the main talent suddenly woke up from her monologue. Our group discussion was very effective this time that we solved almost all the left ambiguous point in this class.

Before leaving, we divided the roles and I would act the bitchy friend of Lyreca. Hope the filming in this Thursday goes well.
