The townhall is turned into a crowded market today. Numbers of owners are showing their handmade products and shoppers are strolling along the narrow alley between the stalls to pick the designs they like. A shopkeeper is holding a black bottle, introducing her homemade drink to a couple. We step forward to listen. She greets us friendly and offers two small cups of oolong tea to let us have a try. New shoppers stream into the hall and she continues to talk to them passionately.
Homewares, food, artworks and clothing, every stall is very bustling. Finally, we stopped at an earring-maker’s shop. Various pairs of earrings in strange shapes are hung on a white board, those ones on the top row are like prawn crackers and the triangle ones down below are like pizza slices. They are all made of clay which creates the sense of unevenness. Most of them are simply black or white, but with a lot of golden specks that catch the light from different angles and shine. The designer is standing aside and organising more earrings that haven’t been placed out. She notices us and gives a warm smile, then helps me to take off the two pairs I picked from the board. I hold them up to my ears to compare and choose the black and golden ‘pizza’ at last.
