So far, I’ve written ten pieces of observations and most of them are related to human behaviour. I thought it was very difficult to have something interesting to write because I live in the city, going to the same places and meeting the same people. The range of my activities is not so wide. Monday’s class provided a good solution to this problem, which is walking for a few minutes in one direction and observing the surroundings. Places where take ten-minute walking from our classroom are actually familiar to me, but I still get different feelings this time. Having some observations becomes the purpose of this walking so I deliberately looked at the passengers when passing the crossroad. I noticed their expressions, clothing and movements. Observational writing is more like a casual thing, it doesn’t mean to write something special, but it still requires attention and thinking. Before writing, I would usually recall what did I do or where had I been today to find some valuable fragments. By doing these practices, I find it is easier to discover the new pleasure in daily life.
In my opinion, class exercise 5 is also to build a connection between the image and sound. Although the sound is the most significant part of an interview, the frame can also illustrate a lot of information. As we discussed in the class, the background could tell how well it is prepared. Our group decided to do an informal one about food so we chose the cafe shop as the background. To fully show the location, we all agreed to have part of the pantry in the frame. We meant to let the interviewee sit at the normal round table but found that would be too formal, so we changed to the high chair that fitted the atmosphere. Besides, the interviewee was the key role of this project. For example, we could all realise that the David Bowie interview was mostly set up because the interviewee was so experienced. For our causal one, Aria did a good job to have some small gestures during talking which looked quite natural. The visual aspect often gives the first impression to audiences so we should think about background settings to achieve a more completed interview.
