Reflection on research process:
During the mid-term break, Trista, Joseph and I had a meeting to discuss the aspects we mentioned in the final document.
Production form: We hold a specific opinion of this topic and has already decided the points we want to criticise. As a result, we consider the single host talk show, like John Oliver or Jon Stewart may be a good choice to express more personal opinions and convince audiences. Also, we did the group practice in this form, so we could learn from it and make improvements.
Content: After choosing the daily show format, it is very necessary to include related graphics and video clips to enrich the content. I re-watched some class examples of John Oliver, and found that the clips should have the comedic feeling and can lead to the following opinions. Alex found a video about the conversation between a vegan man and a livestock farmer, and we watched it together. At first, Joseph was questioning that it was not directly relate to the vaccine issue. However, I thought that is an effective clips showing some common features of vegans. Their dialogues are very dramatic, which has already formed a mocking point, and we can then introduce the main story. Finally we all agreed to use it in the final production.
Social media potential: We quickly reach the agreement to mention Kat Von D at the beginning. First, she is the original reason I chose to do this topic. Second, we need to use celebrity’s power to catch more attention when potential audiences quickly scroll down. Joseph also mentioned that anti-vaccination is not a new topic. However, vegan is a new and popular lifestyle that almost becomes a trend, and this conflict will be a good satire point to talk about.
Changes: When we meet again to write the draft script, we discussed a lot to choose the most relatable and comedic points. We had made a list of mocking points in the first research doc, but would not mention all of them. A successful script should maximise the most important and funny example, so audiences will remember. In this case, we only picked two points for the draft and want to see how these two work for Thursday’s pitching.
