Review for Beauty and the Beast

I watched this movie in Hoyts with my friend full of expectation, however, in my opinion, I will rate this one 2.5/5.

My grandmother always read these Disney fairy stories to me when I was a child and I liked to buy the related magazines in my primary school. In all, Disney affects my childhood a lot. Also, I am a fan of Emma Watson because I really like the way she supports women rights and makes speech to express her opinions confidently. In this film, she plays the main character Belle. Belle is a girl who loves reading very much and wants to teach other girls to read which perfectly matches Emma’s personality. Actually, she successfully shows a independent and strong girl, but I did’t feel her love of the beast. When the beast is attacked by Gaston and nearly died, Belle runs to him and cries. To be honest, I think this crying performance couldn’t raise my emotion. It seems that Belle is not that into the beast.

After reading and learning the introduction of cinema study, I tried to analyse the editing and setting of this film. As a normal audience, I don’t really like the editing. The change speed of the cutting is very rapid which makes me feel a little bit anxious. Also, it spends plenty of time on the scene that village people are singing and dancing to praise Gaston but just a few minutes for the final fighting scene. The fighting between Gaston and the beast is the climax of this movie, and the reaction of Belle is also important. However, I didn’t feel that tension between this two characters which disappointed me.

There is still something good about it! All the supports actors do a really good job. I love Mrs.Potts and her little teacup. The way these two actors talk and act perfectly show the characteristic. In these story, these servants in the beast’s castle push forward the plot development. In addition, the setting and the special effects are amazing. When Belle is dancing with her yellow dress, I feel I go back to my childhood and have a dream to be a princess.
