At first, I was confused after reading week 3 materials. I was thinking that it kept talking about comic and what is the relationship between this comic and the film editing.
The comic indicates the idea that when people observe the parts, they can perceive the whole by using their imagination and logic, and it is called “closure”. Then, it introduces six different skills of transition in the comic. These skills are very similar to film editing. It is impossible to shoot every change in a film, so directors need to think about how to transit the scene to make the story line fluent.
Before shooting a film, director needs to draw the storyboard to set the main scenes, and this step is just like creating a comic. As a result, the six transition scales are also suitable for filming. For different genres, the number of these six kinds of transition is different. For instance, an action movie will have more action-to-action transition.
Another important point to make a good film is the number of shots used to explain one event. Director needs to find a balance between use too much and too little. It is good to leave the imaginary space but also let the audiences understand what is going on.
