Old’s Cool (Studio)

Old’s Cool, one of the Media 5’s Studio, my first 8:30am class (means that I had to wake before 7), fortunately, I had met a few classmates from my other Asian courses, with an interesting tutor Dr. Daniel Binns, that let me feel less lonely and quite relieved in class.

As its and early studio and most of us hadn’t fully awoke yet, Daniel decided to begin with last week’s studio revision (I had  just realised that there’re only studio classes and no lecture), of how newly media had changed our behaviour:

  1. ↑ Access on Tech = ↓ Attention Spans
  2. No longer have time REFLECT
  3. Boredom is ancient history

As times change, we are becoming more relay on new media (e.g. Social platform), that had distributed our attention, our focus on works we are in progress, such as, most of us already have had a habit of keeping checking new messages and feeds in our everyday life. The more time spans on technology, also made us less time to reflect on ourselves, reflect about what we have done,  or having ideas on what we have to work on recently, which, doesn’t allow us to have time being bored, to think, or to ponder on something.

The second part of revision would be: 10 key elements of becoming an excellent YouTuber.

Shareability

Collaboration

Discoverability

Accessibility

Consistency

Targeting

Sustainability

Conversation

Interactivity

Authenticity

Being a YouTuber… One of my dreams that I haven’t even started chasing yet, as I am quite afraid of  being in front of the camera actually, which is also one of the things I want to achieve through this 2-year media program. Anyway, it’s pretty glad to know that how to be YouTuber, and a more outstanding one.

Besides on revising, the first activity (not the only one luckily) was to draw a playground with 4 parts in 5 MINS concentratedly, that could create a loop eventually. Drawing, wasn’t one of the skill that I’m being proud of, and I had to like planning completely each time before started, 5 mins, an impossible task for me absolutely… As I expected, I could just finish half of playground during the first try, and coming to the second one, I had almost done surprisingly (which some of the ideas came from the 1st one). After drawing two of them, our final mission was to combine selected part in these playground sections, to a whole new one. I guess this exercise was intended to show us that the Power and Creativity that could come out of concentrated work, or so called deep work indicated by Cal Newport?

The last exercise before the reviewing project idea, where I’m not included in, would be… ‘Find a place in the classroom that could face the wall, and stand with the wall for the next 10 mins’. A very creative and meaningful one I could say, by using this short while everyday standing out of all the devices, we could have a nap, reflect on what we have done, plan our upcoming project, or even think where to have lunch after class 🙂 , a nice movement that worth to start having from today, right?
