What I Think Media is…? (And Media Studies) [L]

Here comes to week 2, eventually, had just ‘tasted’ what blog writing really is, seems I am going to experience a bachelor course that’s full of drafting reflection for every task… Using English in everyday life looks not that familiar to me as I am a Non-English speaker and writer :\

Enough for grumbling, What’s my first thought for the word ‘Media’? Let’s list 5 things again, (‘5’ sounds like the lucky number of our lecturer?)

Social Media/New Media

Television Program

Media is Informative

Could be found everywhere (even the lecture slides)

Interactive (such as Telstra’s Billboard at Valentine’s Day)

In addition, some of our classmates think Media is a kind of Communication (It’s the title of our program, right?) and could be Connective, links our ideas altogether. Next, We had moved to some basic knowledges of Media. It started with a pretty typical theory:

Sender  →  Medium  →  Message  →  Receiver

Media, doubtfully, is acting as the ‘Medium’ part, for me, an important position of Communication and has numberless way of conveying the message. The next concept is ‘Media Text’, a word that looks hard to figure out what is it, even after going through the description. I guess it means all messages that had been made by all these ‘Media’, even advertisements or our Twitter Feeds. In this case, Media sounds surrounding all of us is many different ways, that we would have gotten in touch with even staying at home all day.

Afterward, would be the an activity of getting to a specific place and ‘mark down'(i.e. Capture and record) Media that we had experienced, that I would like to talk about in the coming post separately, I guess 😀

Reading

David Gauntlett, Making Media Studies: The Creativity Turn in Media and Communication Studies

For me, this reading is quite interesting, different with other so called ‘Academic Reading’ (My first time won’t feel boring with academic reading), Gauntlett used a creative way to tell us what Media Studies really is, used ‘Research for Design‘ at first to show that the essence of Media Studies is to create media rather than studying about the previous, trying to use our own ability to make the world a better one, even just starting by changing the mind of who around you, to make them happy.

He had also indicated that Media have two different main perspectives, to inspire others or being a tool of surveillance. In this reading, he seems want us to be the encouraging type of media makers, with a tend to use some kind of New Media (e.g. Social Media), as the meaning of Media these days had changed to be more initiative, about creating and discussing matters online, although nowadays is an era of information surplus and we may only gain less, the connection network would still be worth upon us.

The last part I would like to mention is the ‘Triggers for Experience‘, the passage had talked about this keyword several times (to show how important it is?),  through Media, we are going to make stuffs that creative enough make our viewers be immersed into, to provoke them instead of giving them answers of our works, leaving spaces for them to engage with it.
