Study 7 is a improvement based on my study 5, I made a mini game again, the teacher helped me a lot, to complete my idea, and some professional operation. There is a major character and many apples, and the apple will fall down, visitors can use the arrow key to control the major character to avoid those apples. After making this program, I can set a control key by myself, and also learned how to make the object decrease and increase automatically. Indeed, there are many shortcoming of this program, when I showing this to my friend and they playing that, they told me there are some place that the character can always avoid the apple and doesn’t need to move, and the apple always falling in the same line so that will be a little bit boring, also they mentioned that when the character touched the apple, the ‘fail’ sound is not sensitive enough, which is not a completed game. I’m satisfied with my study 7, the idea was better than study 6 and also I made my effort on it.

For study 6, I had spent almost my time on find inspirations, in fact, I couldn’t think out any good idea, when I see my classmates has some great thought, I feel more worrying, some of them try to make a maze game, or popkart. Actually, I am very interested on Jermmy’s puzzle program, and I want to make a new interactive work base on his puzzle program, but his work was so complicated and I don’t have any good idea with that. So, at the first, I decided to make a mini game, because that will be more easier for audience and also for me, so initially, I took some pictures and cut some pieces from the original picture, and let audiences to use their voice to control the small pieces and put them into the right place, actually that was a great idea and quite interesting game, but I fail to complete that because the lack of my professional skill, that also prove that idea and skill are both important in a work. Finally, I simplified that game based on my initial idea.

 

Reflection

After finish this assignment, I got some new skills and found ways to get inspiration, the most important thing is I realize that sometimes the way people think is just one-side view, we need to discuss with people around us and exchange idea, new information always inspires people. My growth environment may influence me that do not have much creative thinking, after I chose this class, I started to try to do something to be more creative and get divergent thinking.

 

When we start to do study 4, my group members decided to do a program that about extreme emotion of human, one of my group members proposed that we can make two emotion, smile and angry, then set a voice induction system which can detect the volume then change the to make the picture change to smile or angry face. After that me and my group members had a great idea with this project, we decided to make this to a ‘class warning system’, which can be a reminder to some people that when their volume in the class is loud and may interfere other classmate, we made the induction system to be sensitive, when the voice be a designated volume, the smile face will change to a red face, then there is a camera can catch the person and stop in that moment. That is an interesting work for us, when our teacher helping us, we also got some technical improve.

 

When finished study 4, we had a chance to show our work and see other classmates’ work and get some more idea and suggestions. There were lots of great works I saw, I admire their creativity and imagination, some of their program even can be a real interactive art not just exercise like ours. After some classmates experienced our program, they suggested us to adjust the sensitivity to be stronger to make it to be more sensitive, and they think when they shout to the computer, they don’t feel angry but embarrassed, so some of them think we can change the angry face to be a awkward face. on that class we got lots of great advices.

 

The most interesting and useful lesson is we went to the ACMI and an exhibition to get some inspiration. That was useful and really inspired me on the doing the main project. I decided to make a simple game base on a console game that I played in ACMI center. My teacher helped me a lot on this work, and I used some monster pictures on it, to make the program looks cute.

 

The facts prove that I’m improving. from last assignment to this assignment, I learned that the idea is more important than technology, when the time I saw other classmates’ distinctive program, and also when I was viewing the interactive art and exhibition in ACMI, I tried to understand the productions in some other ways which is not the way I think usually. Realize to get creative thinking and try to get divergent thinking is the biggest progress in this step.

 

There are lots of things that I need to improve and be aware, I found that when I approach some new or challenge things, such as about using Max, I will not be active to explore the new functions by myself, but rely on the help from the teacher. I also find that I have been simplifying my initial ideas for reduce the difficulty. So, the next time I think I should try to watch more videos online and download some materials, that may make my program be more interesting and have more possibilities. I also realize that this is a good chance to physically put our ideas into action when we use this. The manipulation is also necessary, because when I got a bunch of ideas but don’t know how to present them, that’s a really disappointing thing, although I said that creative thinking is more important than technology.

 

Overall, this assignment is definitely better than the last one, and also added more creative ideas into the work to make it be vivid. I looking forward to learn more about using max 7 and create more amazing interactive art in the future.

Statement 3(solo)

 

For the last work of this assignment is a solo project, our teacher took us to ACMI and exhibition center which is located in Federation square to get some inspiration, there were lots of interaction arts, when I saw them I really got a lot idea, but the other problem is how to present the idea. Finally, I chose a game that I played in there, the game is like a little kid in the middle, and the surrounding is all shooting machine that will attack the kid, the kid needs to run and avoid those shooting bubble. I started to make a program like that, and I decided to make it to be cute and can attract children. When I doing this program, my teacher helped me a lot, he used many new codes and made some new effects which is cool, we made a funny picture in the middle, and set it as a move window which controlled by the keyboard, when I press the up and down button, it will go up or down, then I set some little monsters chasing the middle one. When the whole program done, it looks so cute and funny which is my purpose. Even though it is a simple work, but the idea is interesting and I also got a lot creative ideas when I went to the exhibition and ACMI, which may useful in the next assignment.

Statement 2(Study 5)

 

After we finish our study 4, we shared our work in the class, when I see their works, I and my group member also had some new ideas, many of them made a great interact work. When we present our program, many people did not feel angry but awkward, and also the sensitivity is too high to make the emoji to change, so we started to try to change the code to adjust the sensitivity, the challenge is when we setting the code, when the code is 0.02 or smaller than 0.02, the sensitivity will remain, not getting weaker. Then we got some advice from our teacher, he suggested we can add another message to make the whole system get much weaker, then the problem solved. In the end, we add original text and two equal sign to help audience get better understand of our work. To be frankly, we did not do much change on study 5, because me and my group members don’t have any new ideas with that, we had thought to add more things into this work, but we found that was meaningless, so we just keep what we did on last study, and base on study 4 to do some little improve. Overall, we had a improve to compare with last assignment, even though we got lots of help from our teacher, but that will make me get deep impression when our teacher helping us. This work also sparked my creativity, I also get a new breakthrough.

Statement 1(Study 4)

 

After we did some exercise with using Max to make program and express our inspiration, I had learned some new operations and codes. After the last assignment, I realized that the most important aim of our lesson is to get inspiration, then make a simple work to express it. At the first, we inspired by other classmate’s work, we decided to make a program that can use the volume of our voice to change some elements (Such as pictures or videos) of that program. After we had that thought, we tried to explore how to make it by using Max, we also called help from our teacher. The Final work we complete is a system that change a picture by using our voice getting louder or weaker. The reason why we had this idea is, we found that sometimes when we had discussion in the class, our voice may get louder unconsciously that may interfere other classmates, so we made this program to be a reminder, when our voice getting louder, the emoji face will from ‘Smile’ changing to ‘Angary’, also there is a camera can catch your face, the reason why we set this is to make the audience be aware of this, then achieve our original goal. We met many challenges that we doing this study, such as to adjust the sensitivity, we tried a lot codes then found that, the smaller number get higher sensitivity.

After I finished three of my studies by using ‘Max’ application, I feel that my efforts have been fruitful, not just learned how to use ‘Max’, but also learned what is interactive art and how to produce a interactive art.

 

When the first time I heard about interactive art, I have no idea with that, so I searched online and looked up some famous productions, I found that interactive art is an interesting art. Interactive art requires visitors to “do” something to make the art vivid and interesting, it has lots of uncertain effects which can bring surprise for visitors. When we be told to make a simple interactive art by our self, I’m worried because I’m not a creative person, I searched a lot production online, to choose a relatively simple art but also need to be creative one. Finally, I found a place that has lots of funny equipment which is located in federation square, when I hang out with my friend, I just found it incidentally. When I finished my first program, I learned the simple operation of ‘Max’, and I also learned that if we want to make a good interactive art, to find a great inspiration is the most important part, and we need to be patient when we looking for it. The second important thing to make a great production is how to use ‘Max’, this step is a quite difficult step and also be a challenge for me, I realize that simple operation can not present the meaning that I want to express, so, I tried to add some relatively complicated effects into my production, but there are more problems arisen: the operation need to be extremely cautious and can not be any mistakes, such as the connect order need to from down side to the upper side, the link looks are the same but if you link it from upper side to the down side, the effect won’t be showed. so I constantly update the code and see the result effect to make that get closer to my inspiration which is not a specific thing yet, ask for help from teacher and classmates is also significant for me, when I discuss with my classmates, we can exchange knowledge and produce more new things into my work, the teacher can help me to fix problems. To be frank, It is a great experience to learn the material of the interactive media, although it is a rough process.

 

The three different works I finished so far can be seen my progress, the first production I made is a simple work, which just used some basic effects such as flurry, chromatic and mosaic. When I did the second program, which is a group work, all of our group members has made efforts into that work, after we viewed other classmates’ work, we decided to make our work be more complicate and tried to search some tutorial videos and asked help from our teacher. The third work I made is focus on myself, I shoot a series footage to link to be a movement video, the operation is better than the other two works, I use keyboard and touch pad to control the footages and complete the presentation. Overall, after I finish those three programs, I can feel that my skills of using ‘Max’ to produce different interactive work are promoted, also my learning skills, even English also Improved.

 

However, there are still a lot of shortcomings I have, I realized my creativity are so poor and need to be improved. Therefore, I need to do some deeper research of interactive art and also need to be more creative. ‘Max’ for me is a new thing, the programs I made are all basic operation, there are many codes and unknown effects I can explore in the following lessons. Overall, the most important thing I need to improve in the next production is to be more creative and try to explore more interesting effects.

 

I found that some of my classmates did a great work by using ‘Max’ to produce a program, their inspirations are great and ingenious, their programs are various and make me feel surprised. When I saw their work, I feel that my program was so simple and rough, but I did learn a lot from them, some of their codes such as press a button to make a window disappear or some other effects can be used into my program. their work can also inspire me to have some great idea. I know that everyone have their own strong points, so some people can produce a great interactive when they just approach ‘Max’, but I always remember I am keep learning, maybe is slower than others, but I will make more efforts and also won’t stop my steps.

For my third study, at the first I don’t have any idea about that, when I called my teacher for help, he helped me to come up with an idea —- There are several windows, and I will put some different footages and combine them into a full video, my initial think makes some footages like a man ‘jump’ from the first window to the second one, and he throws a ball to the third window. So I made a window can be controlled by a button which is also set by me, so the final effect will be like I use the mouse to make the first window get close to the second one, and the video of the first window will be a person pushing the border, and then I will press different buttons to play the following videos in order. I am pleased with this inspiration and feel happy I can make that program to show my inspiration, of course, my teacher helped me a lot. From study 1 to study 3, I can feel that I’m getting more and more familiar with this application, although there are lots of things I can learn.

In this fancy world, there are too much complicate things that cannot represent yourself, the only thing that can represent you is your true heart. So we made a program which has lots of windows as mirrors that only one can see yourself clearly, for the others, they are all blurry which you can not see the ‘real you’. There are many cameras, but only the middle one can be seen clearly and the speed is also normal, some of the other cameras have various effects, such as burry, chromatic, mosaic and so on, but all of them cannot be shown a real image, and we set a button, just press ‘2’ on the keyboard, all ‘unreal’ images will disappear. When we set the button, we had got a trouble, we remember one of our classmates has done that and our teachers showed us, so we tried a lot of codes but still not achieve, then we called our teacher helped us, when the teacher tell us how to make it, I had deepened my memory, so next time when I need to do that operation, it will be easier. Overall, the second program is much better than the first one I did, I learned lots of new codes and many effects, such as add music, overlapping two videos, even though this program is still a simple work.

Interactive art is a totally new words for me, I searched online and know that interactive art is a kind of art which need visitors to ‘do’ something to make the art become vivid and have more interesting phenomenon. When I choosing one interactive art and need to use ‘Max’ to present that, initially, I searched online and looked up many famous interactive arts, but I didn’t find an art is after my own heart. When I went to a movie center located in federation square, I got an idea. The interactive art that in the movie center has a big screen, when people move in front of that screen, the screen will capture people’s movement, it will present many effects, such as double image, or make people’s body in a circle and so on. Based on this inspiration, I made a program to present it. There are five windows in that program, and they have different speeds to show ‘image overlapping’. This is the first time I use ‘Max’, by create this program, I learned the basic operation and make it be more skilled. The most complicated thing is when we link all the object, the order need to be right, otherwise the program would not be open properly.
