Final reflection

The purpose of this work is to solve an global issue and illustrate how technology can improve the quality of life and can be the solution to the problem. The issue I chose was ‘equal access to resources’. So my project is called Hopsca, a comprehensive building that integrates various advanced technologies to provide people with access to various kinds of resources. The resources in the building can be easily and quickly provided to the community, and allowing people to enjoy the convenience of the smart community while maintain a low-carbon lifestyle. The reason I chose to do a stop motion animation is that I want the video to be full of visual attractions and the audience to be able to ‘see’ the convenience living in Hopsca. Technologies can provide us with innovative ways of living and I would like my video to be seen in a more creative way.

Imagine my work is going to be displayed in somewhere else, the first thing I would like to improve is the content of the video or I can say the ‘depth’ of the video. This video shows several technologies and if it is going to be screen in a technology exhibition or commercial event, then I want to show more details of the technology and highlight the products. Another core point is that I need more time for the shooting process to enhance the clarity of the video and get rid of the shadows in several shots. I do not have any professional equipment for the shooting which I used my iPad to take the shots and this is also my first time to make a stop motion animation video. I feel it is a satisfactory result for my first attempt but I hope that the shooting process can be improved and be more professional.

A SAFE SEPARATION — Neville Kurniawan

In my previous reflection on week 9’s presentation, I mentioned about Neville’s initial idea about combing mental health issue with AI technology. In his video, there is a mental health app for the protagonist to keep him on the right track during desperate time. I think Neville’s choices of using words, voice and images are very clever. The music is on exactly at the climax of the emotional moment. The video has this emotionally touching atmosphere which I feel like watching a film. The colour grading of the video is very beautiful and I really like the opening of this video which he placed some interesting footages taken on the street. During this difficult time which people are told to stay at home, the AI companion is a good choice for those who might feel lonely and desperate.

        EYEDORA — Leslie Wang

The protagonist in this video is colourblind however she has the dream of becoming an artist. She receive this Eyedora and become able to see the colours and achieve her dream eventually. This video has very detailed story line which I believe Leslie put a lot of efforts to it. Leslie did a great job in acting. I like the part she took the POV shots from the angle of the protagonist who was not able to see the colours, showing the audience the world without seeing the colours. Then there is a reverse of the story and everything seems to become beautiful and full of hope. This highlights the effect of Eyedora and its usefulness in solving problem. The use of colours is very successful in this video.

The course Real To Reel exhibit documentary works, showcasing a lot of personal stories and exploring different ways to arrange non-fiction material into various forms of media for different using and targeted audiences. I especially like one of them which called “Excuse me!”. This is an animated documentary and I feel the form of the documentary is very interesting to look at. It tells the stories through animated characters which make small events vivid. The director tells the stories of some low-wage workers in a very funny way. Some of the stories are ridiculous but they are all true stories. I think there is a sense of humour in this video which makes it a great short documentary.

To sum up, I spent an unforgettable semester with all of my friends in the course. Everyone has paid a lot of effort and enthusiastic this semester. I am surprised by people’s creative ideas and works. I am looking forward to see you in the future!
