Film Light – Reflection 3

Depth of filed is another essential factor in terms of lighting. There are three elements which are determined to Depth of filed. To illustrate that, focal length, lens aperture and point of focus were introduced in class. I got to know that: the shorter the focal length, the greater the depth of filed (the longer & the shallower); the wider the aperture, the shallower the depth of field (the smaller & the greater); the closer the point of focus, the shallower the depth of field (the further & the greater).

In the third exercise , we were running a very simple shooting in the class. Before going out of the classroom, I was taught to check all the equipment in order to make sure the shooting (very necessary). I adjusted the viewfinder and pressed off the zebra pattern which might be disturbing during the shooting. Making sure that Iris and Exposure was set to manual so that the camera was under our control. Audio section was set to auto and internal. Finally, all the information of the camera could be quickly checked by pressing the STATUS button. During the shooting, I got chance to be one of the actresses instead of manipulating the camera which I was doing better than acting. I never tried acting before and it was a nice short experience for me.

After the shooting, Robin introduced the lights. I drew down the lights on my notebook as it was the first time for me to know them. (I found myself drawing a lot in this course…Not sure if I got them all right. Please correct me if I made any mistake.) It was the Fresnel light that we were looking at and the lens was called Fresnel lens. It is a commonly used light and it was named after their inventor, Augustin-Jean Fresnel, who developed the lens initially for use in lighthouses.
