Real to Reel – Final work appraisement

This documentary tells a story of a 30-year-old Chinese man coming to Australia to study and work here. The work explores the theme of the cultural expectations of the Chinese young people. What is expected to be presented to the audience is another kind of love and expectations from parents to children which is different from Western style of education. I think this short documentary expresses what I wanted to show the audiences originally. Because of the length of time, many of the more detailed presentations have been cut out and some of our original ideas were not able to be achieved. However, the overall expression of a young man who grew up under Chinese way of education overcoming the pressures from the society and family is basically well expressed from my point of view.

I am proud of the overall performance and cooperation of our group. We are very satisfied with the final effects of the work. I have to say that it is not perfect but we have maximised the role of each individual on the basis of our own abilities. We’ve got some really beautiful shots. Personally, I love those clips that took in the garden. In addition, we tried some creative ideas even though they were not covered in the final piece. For example, we tried to shoot the shadows in the garden to stimulate the scene of Ron saying goodbye to his mother. Another one was the clipping things which we got our inspiration from the film “Searching”. Those were some of the interesting tries.

I feel like my editing skill of using premiere pro to edit the video clips should be improved a little bit more. I am familiar with the basic editing however it is not enough for the whole process of our video production. I would like to know more about some specific effects might needed for the production. For example, we added an effect to our documentary title to make the title appears gradually.
