I believe our team collaborated very well. During the whole process of making, no-one was absent for any reason. Everyone in the team was responsible for the whole process. The work was assigned according to personal strengths and wishes.Everyone was clear about the division of the work, and the individual’s advantages were brought into play and united smoothly. Kenneth brings up some creative ideas to try, such as using splitting lens to set up the story and trying to use shadows to create the scene of Ron saying goodbye to his mother before his leaving(not placed in the documentary), to make the work more interesting. Yu is mainly responsible for the basic editing of the clips and some post-effect processing. Vivian is familiar with the cameras and has lots of experience in shooting. I make plans for the whole team and lead the shooting and editing. I am familiar with the sound editing so I am also responsible for the sound part of our group. Everyone is involved in all stage of the documentary production. The work is not done separately, so I am very fortunate to have my team mates. In addition, our guest Ron is very cooperative and tries his best to meet all the requirements.
There were some issues during the process in the making of “1,2,3”. But I am glad to say that we overcame the problems together. From my point of view, those issues could basically divided into two big parts. I think the biggest problem in the shooting was probably that our shooting time was too limited, so some of our original ideas were not able to be achieved. Another big problem was in the editing process. English was the second language to our participant Ron so that caused some difficulties to our editing.
The first day’s shooting was not well prepared. And because of that, A big part of our shooting was wasted.
1. We shot one of our interviews in Carlton garden. The view was really beautiful however the background sound was very noisy. Moreover, our main camera was out of focus at some point during the interview.
Solutions:
-did basic editing of the interview clips and cut out the useless content from the clips and kept only what we need.
-put those clips into one whole piece of interview.
-exported the edited one clip of the interview and emailed it to our participant Ron.
-explained the situation and told our participant that we would re-shoot that interview part on Saturday.
2. Another interview shot on that day was indoor and the voice was all right however we found the lights caused shadows on Ron’s face.
Solutions:
-adjusted the cameras
-asked Ron to try not to leaning forward.
The second day’s shooting was on Saturday however the shooting was delayed.
3. The agreed shooting time was from 3:00pm to 7:00pm. Because of personal issue, Ron could not make it on time. The shooting was delayed for nearly two hours and we only got about two hours left for shooting.
Solutions:
-decided to shoot as much as we could at different locations and different scenes at each location to make our B-roll richer.
-abandoned some of our prepared questions and cut down to 2-3 questions each interview. (3 interviews in all)
In the process of editing, we discovered Ron a bit nervous. Because of that, it caused some difficulties to our editing.
4. The interviews were not smooth and we got too many clips of interviews. There were pauses every two or three sentences and the body angle would change.
Solutions:
-cut his words out and pieced them together to make a whole clip.
-used B-roll / close up side camera / photo / black screen to make the transpositions more natural.
