In the afternoon on Tuesday, Madeline, Jana and I decided to go to Swanston street to get some inspiration of shooting. Outside the building there were some benches and the sun was just so warm. We noticed that there was a mother who carried her three year old little girl sitting on the bench and there were bright smiles on their faces. When I asked her why they were here, she said, “her kindergarten teacher told me that she seemed to be very unhappy and asked me whether to pick her up. When I took her out, she resumed her excitement and liveliness. I think she may be a bit uncomfortable with the new environment here”. The mother told us that it was their first year staying in Melbourne. Everything is fresh, new city, new job, new people. The girl was very cheerful while we took the photos. She poses in different gestures and her face was covered with sunshine.
We walked along the street and down to the state library. Under one of the big trees in front of the library, a man who seemed to be a business man carrying a briefcase was sitting there. I captured the moment when the tram was moving behind him while he was looking forward with his phone in his hand. He told us he was waiting for his friend from Switzerland. He planned to take his friend to get around the city. He did not notice the camera when I took the picture and we asked his permission after the shooting which made the picture really natural and real.
There were a group of people resting in front of the library when we decided to return. I felt that this group of people and the street scene were well integrated so I just quickly press the shutter. I noticed that they seemed to be tired and I asked them whether they came here to travel. One of the women said:” I worked here and they come to travel. I have taken them to melbourne central to have a look at the view of the city, to experience the culture here”. It was a great experience to see different people from different places gather in the city for different reasons.
