Task 3 – Refining

In the past, when I saw some media works every time, I can feel their creativity. It’s the same thing that happens in life, but they always find places that I haven’t found and present them in a media way. I am puzzled by that. But through this task three, I seem to understand a little. I explored two parts in task three, and a large part of it was randomly photographing things that were noticed outside and trying to combine them into a video. Noticing is a new word for me. When I have not done this task, I do not feel that there are too many things in life to pay attention to, which are very common, so they will not be particularly concerned about. But when I seriously started filming this mission, my thoughts slowly changed: it turned out to be so many things that I didn’t notice, and it was so pleasant to shoot. The real beginning of this search process, like a certain of not stopping, and even the leaves on the ground, the flag, which is inserted in the land, this very tiny things want to be photographed. When I really put into the time, I found that I have a wide range of horizons, you will think is novel for ordinary common things.

When I finished my first experiment, I was not particularly satisfied. The question I put forward in my experiment is this: is it possible to combine all the things that have been photographed? In fact, I particularly hope that the answer to this question is positive, that is, the answer is: yes, all the things that can be taken together. It’s the only way to prove that creative media videos I’ve seen before have been created. But from my own feedback to others, the answer is no. This also makes me think: is not the experimental method I think out is not quite right. But I still haven’t changed my experiment, because everyone has everyone’s understanding, now this is my understanding of this problem. So I made a second experiment based on this: how to make sure that what you notice and shoot down is the group that can be a theme. In the second experiment, I had a general idea of what was going on in my mind, so I realized that I would subconsciously take a picture of a video. And in the editor’s time, will follow that idea to implement. In fact, experiment two (experimental 2) and experimental Three (experimental 3) should be combined to speak, because these two are the same time I came up with. In experiment three, I added a background music for the experiment two videos, and compared the video with no music after adding music. I found that I prefer experiment three because it really makes me realize the benefits of noticing, and sometimes we really need to spend time observing things around us. Add music, I suddenly feel: I can make this video. Although this video may be especially common in the eyes of the outside world, there is no place to attract others. But for me, the three videos of task three are my own little progress, a little progress on noticing. A good media person, they can create good, popular media works, it is because they usually notice more than we, no matter how small things, they will always find and enlarge out, after editing to show the advantages of these things. I would like to take a few more things in the future, and slowly develop the habit of noticing things around me, I believe that this will be a great help to the media editor.

In the three readings of Frankham, Panse and Ivens, I found the importance of sound. It can be more of a video or film to express the theme and emotion, but also to allow the audience to produce more different for the video association. So I’m looking forward to the fourth project. Since the combination video clip is so interesting, it’s certainly interesting to explore the combination of sounds. Explore people’s attention to the sound of daily life, that is, the theme of noticing. Listen to ordinary objects or not notice the nature of the sound of the voice of what is, what the novel effect is if they combined. That’s what I came up with on the third project, and I want to study in the fourth project.

Task 3 – Reflection

The teachers basically recognize what I have done about the video, as I explained the reasons to them why put music into the video instead of adding another piece of video clip. The teachers agree with me and discuss with me on the following points: First, by putting music, the content of the video can be more specific; people will feel that the video is not dull and boring, but vibrant and vivid with music in it, which the teachers think interesting. Secondly, music can give certain kinds of atmosphere to the video which cannot be achieved by adding another piece of video. Based on this, I’d like to combine different kinds of sounds in nature together to see what effects it will have. The teachers agree on this idea that it may be amazing to combine different sounds together. But too much sound together may make people feel confused that needs to make clear for some time. And the teacher also advises me to make clear what do I really want to do. Based on the analysis and suggestions of the teachers, in my following experiment, I will be more careful and clear on the purpose.

Experimental 3

Question:

If the video has background music, will the theme be highlighted? Or will it leave a deeper impression on the audience?

For the last experiment, I feel it is the simplest one of the three videos as it includes fewest steps. And it is the one that I am most interested in. I showed special interest in all kinds of background music in all TV dramas, movies and animations. I know that if the music is properly combined into clips, it can deepen the appealing of plots. Thus, I try to integrate music. When a video without narration is clipped simple video, does the addition of background achieve the same effect?

Ingredients:

Premiere

Method:

Step 1: to re-edit the previous video and add background music

Step 2: to invite 5 people to visit to compare and comment

I have a question: what are differences between the video with background music and the one without background music? Which one leaves a deeper impression on you? Which one better represents the theme?

Reflection:

Considering the 5 audiences and my definition of the theme of the previous two videos? I chose to add cheerful background music. The original video looked incoherent. It made me feel something was missing. After the music was added, it was still worse than the second one. All feedbacks were similar, saying that music better embodied the theme and made them feel happier. I think background music has been the best answer to my question, which highlights and extends the theme of the video and deepens the feeling of the audience.

The technique, Montage, mentioned by Frankham:

“As Ashton points out, for Deleuze montage:

includes framing (the choice of the image border and what is seen or even heard and what is not), composition (the arrangement of elements within the frame), and camera movement, as well as editing, including sound editing and mixing. Along these lines, lighting, various uses of focus, movement within the frame, movement of the frame, even performance (gestures, expressions, dialogue) can all limit or highlight elements (or images) of a film. (2008 para. 9)”

After shooting is completed, the editors use the video and audio recordings to blend the segments together.

Another filming example that I read was Koyaanisqatsi. A film does not have narration. It just uses different views and solemn music to express the central idea to us. And, the same idea was also found in the process of reading Panse and Ivens.

“In the resulting film, the sounds and images are framed and composed and often sounds from different sources are added. When we watch the product of this process, we see different assemblages to those perceived at the time by the filmmaker. Thought is produced in the process of generating these images. “

The avant-garde movie also emphasizes on the sound and rhythm, which is why these images of nature could be presented to the audiences with full of the life and infections.

In sum, my own ideas, feedbacks from 5 persons and reading experience all indicate how important music is to a video. It can better reflect theme and emotion of a video or movie, arouse audience’s more imagination for the video and enables everyone to develop different feeling on the same video or movie. In my opinion, the video like that is a truly good video.

Actually, the whole video has some advantages. For example, the shooting quality was not good enough. Since I used Handycam, which does not have a tripod, the screen shook sometimes. And, I did not use DSLR for shooting, which caused low pixels. Furthermore, close-up scenes, e.g., flowers and grasses, could not be focused. If the focus could be adjusted, it allowed people to notice what you intended them to know, instead of presenting a wide scope of perspective.
