What made you stop to record the moments of noticing you did?
At first, the teacher asks us to think of a shooting topic, but I have no ideas. However suddenly, there is one case comes into my mind. I choose a lesson named Television Culture on Tuesday. At that class, the teacher asked us to think about one question: where was TV.I gave my answer like it was on the street’s screen. Then I decide: I could shoot the big screen. The screen shows various company’s products or ads per day. Most people including myself may not notice if the ads showed on screen are same every day, even though we have a glance at it when we are walking on the street but we forget it quickly. I’m sure fewer people will shoot the big screen at the same time. Thus I make a choice to shoot the screen at the same time and the same place that becomes my shooting topic.
How did the way you collect relate to your initial research prompt? & What did you discover/learn about making media through noticing?
The initial research prompt is to see how the advertising uses the notice of people to enhance their popularity and expand their brand images. So we have noticed the five videos on the screen at the same time every day for a week.
The videos on the screen played every day are something people watched occasionally, but not intentionally. No one would put the things that we saw from the videos into the conversation unless there was some connection between the already happened conversations with the video contents. Then suddenly, the video contents would appear in our mind and we would notice what we saw.
We did see what the videos were playing, but until there was a link or connection point showed up, this memory of watching buried in our sub-consciousness. After repeating it in our mind, we suddenly realized that there were birds and there was merry-go-round, there were sports, and there were live programs. The video on the big screen in the street is a way for advertising, and it is a social media platform to put the seeds and impression of the products and news in people’s minds. So when people want to buy some products or to do something, their instinct would be affected by the pictures they have seen before. This kind of notice is unconscious but it also has its functions.
What question(s) arise for you out of this making?
The important problem in the process of shooting is patience. As a lazy person, it is hard for me to go Federation square for the purpose of shooting at a fixed time every afternoon. One thing that I can’t predict is the weather condition which means the screen will show nothing if the weather is bad. Another problem is the device. The big screen picture shot by mobile phones are low-quality images that we can find clear ripple on it. (An effect that I do not know how to explain).
