In this lecture, the teacher let us draw the learning graph and I feel I benefit a lot. The most valuable thing I learned is some concepts of the media. In this semester, we have learned various kinds of concepts and forms of the media and I realize it’s not just a simple world but has very complicated in its concepts. Even the internet, commerce and different cultures contain some elements of the media, which give us more efficiency and more convenient life and make us easier to communicate and discover the things happened in the world. Nowadays, many enterprises apply the media to propaganda themselves and also gain more benefits by various kinds of media. And I find the media are interesting, which are worthy for exploring.

The challenging part certainly is the editing software of the media like Preemiere Pro, Audition and etc. But I think they are practical knowledge I acquires very much in this semester. Before that, when I watched TV or movie, I always think it’s no big deal and I can handle it by myself. But now I start to learn this editing tools and equipments in practice, I find it’s not that easy like what I thought before. There is so much I need to learn.

In this semester, I also knew some things better. If I want to become a professional media editor, I should not only better arrange the working time but also improve my skills. At first, I always start to do my task until one day before the deadline, which decreases the quality of completion and also cannot assure I finish the task in time. In addition, I always feel I have some good ideas or creative thoughts but they are constrained by the deficiency of technical skills. I’m adapting the university life gradually now. I hope I can deeply study the relative knowledge of the media and how to use the software of the media, as well as better arrange my schedule.

Advantages:

I think our audio work is very creative. Just like the assessment we received on the tutorial last week, we add some interesting audio effects in our audio work like sound of writing, sound of computer typing, notification tone of phone message and etc to emphasize the person is studying or working. And apply the suddenly appeared notification tone of short message to show that the social media interrupts the studying or working in which people’s attention is distracted. We think it’s a good idea. In the main part of our audio work, the contents of dialogues among us have good transition and cohesion, such as, when one is going to stop this part and enter the next part, we apply the notification tone as the transition.

Disadvantages:

Firstly, I think we didn’t apply too much audio effects in the whole work but too much sounds of our selves. Now that it’s an audio work, I think we should add more creative and interesting audio effects in it because dialogues, monologues and background music take most parts in the overall work. Certainly, we determined the type of our audio work as the podcast and focused on the topic of “how do social media effect your productivity.”, which do not need too much audio effects indeed. And we have added some interesting audio effects in our work already. But I still think we should add more audio effects in our work (not very much, just a little bit in the dialogue and monologue) in which our audio work will be better. Secondly, the effects of recorded sound are very different from what we expected. For example, when we were recording, we thought we had used enough tone and emotions but the effects were really monotonous and dull when played it out. It sounds like we are wasting time on purpose and also makes audiences feel boring and even stop listening. Hereto, I find that we cannot just speak out what we want to express and we also should bring some exaggerated intonations into the audio work in which audiences may feel the work is vivid and enjoyable.

Our group did not intentionally connect our work with the contents of the previous lectures, tutorials and reading. But I think I have learned a lot from them. At the first beginning of this semester, we have discussed what were the own considered media and also have made some interesting exercises, such as discover various kinds elements of medium in different regions and take picture or record a small video or audio. This task makes me more understand that what are the media and the various kinds of media forms. The common thing of the tutorials in the sixth and seventh week is that we need prepare in advance. We need to clearly know the contents that we are going to record, what kinds of audio effects we are going to apply and where do we add the audio effects, the length of each audio material, how to integrate all audio materials meaningfully and etc. Even though we can well arrange the audio materials in the post-editing, we prefer arrange the overall structure in advance and then start to record the audio. In the reading of the fifth and sixth week, I have learned how to choose proper topics to attract audiences and touch a chord with them. With the increasingly influence of the social media in modern society, especially in this information era, more and more people concentrate on the social media in order to satisfy their inner demands and also the longing for be concerned and be focused, which include many student group. Our topic is “Attention” so it’s easy for us to think of the social media.

I have learned there are various kinds of audio effects like background sound, over-voice, monologue, spot sound and etc. Actually, I knew these elements but I didn’t put focus on them before. Now in order to better complete the project, I realise the importance of them. We list them as knowledge and study them. The sound of computer typing, sound of camera, sound of opening door or closing door and etc, it may bring different feeling to people by matching rational plots and contents to these sounds. People will pay more attention to the audio and imagine the things listened when there is no intuitive visual effect of videos. Besides, the contents a work talks or the audio effects in the work can make audiences more understand what you want to express and strike a chord with audiences. You even can apply various different kinds of audio effects to create your own unique audio works. I believe the effects must be very shocked.

Before being a part of the collaboration group, I have never thought about of me to be a team player. Actually, I always hold the thought that finishing a job by my own is more convenient and more flexible, but then through cooperation with others, I have learned that listening to others’ suggestions and having team members to talk about the same thing but giving so much more different opinions and ideas are such a wonderful experience to grow. I have learned that doing a job alone is good, but sometimes it feels better to work something great out by the efforts of teamwork. Teamwork has made me more willingly to listen to others and to dig out my potentials more.

We are going to present our rough cut to Brian and a guest he invited in the tutorial of this week. They will assess our audio work. Our group presents the start and the interviews finished last week. We also speak our assumption of the audio work and what we want to express, as well as enquire about some questions like what kinds of forms should we use, how do we better add the interview into the work, do we need add some transition sound into the each interview and etc. We’re glad to receive their suggestions, which are very helpful. They make us clear how to organise the structure of our work, which part is good, which parts also need to complete and improve, how to make the work more vivid and more interesting and etc.

The suggestion we received are as follow.

Add the sound of writing or computer typing to show the person is studying or working. This idea is really good. The sound of computer typing is very interesting but the sound of writing is not very clear, which make audiences feel its empty or the work starts so slowly. May be we can add some our own words in that part to reveal the person is studying like monologue.

Make it more like a story. Just like we apply the sudden appeared notification tone of mobile phone to express the studying or working is interrupted and thus present the social media distract the attention of people, which fully embody our topic: “how do social media effect your productivity”

Don’t put all interviews together. Too long interview may make audiences feel lengthy. We have interviewed 3-4 persons and we put them together in the rough cut. Hannah says that, “don’t put them all together. You should separate.” “You can cut the contents you do not need. The answers of some people are similar so you can separate them, cut and then integrate them in which the work will be better”, the guest recommends.

It does not have to determine the form is podcast or documentary. May be we can integrate them as long as make the work more interesting.

Add some special effects in the music at the beginning, such as change the sound from the left channel slowly into the right channel and then return it back to the left channel in which make the sound feel like run across ears. It will be amazing to use earphone to listen this part.
