Media Workshop – 4

In this week’s workshop, we talked about this week’s reading, which is ‘The Clarity of the Craftsman’. This reading is related to the talk video that showed to us at yesterday’s lecture, the speaker and the writer is the same person, who are Cal Newport.

Focusing on the craftsman mindset, ‘be so good they cannot ignore you’. On the other hand, the passion mindset shows when you focus only on what your work offers you, it makes you hyperaware of what you don’t like about it, leading to chronic unhappiness. The passion mindset is almost guaranteed to keep you perpetually unhappy and confused.

According to the reading, most people adopt the passion mindset; however, the craftsman mindset is the foundation for creating work you love. My dad always asks me to do what I want and what I love to do, whatever in choosing university’s major or find the job in the future. I think that is true, because I will not have passion to do something that I do not really like. For example, I am interested in media. It is the reason why I choose media as my major in the university. Although this major needs high creative mind and high knowledge about editing and I am really not good at it, I still have confidence to finish the course because I like it and I want to achieve my dream.

Then, we spent some time on the checklist and the assessment. Tomorrow is the due date for the first assessment, everyone seems busy on their videos and reflections because most of students maybe still not finish them. Fortunately, I have done in the weekend, so what I needed to do in this class was to rename the folders and made some changes about the work.

Mr. Brian gave each of us a number and divided us into five groups again. The task we need to do was to share our videos or blogs and always use ‘Color Hats System’ to analysis. I showed my video to group members and hoped gain some advices from them. Fortunately, they liked my video and they thought it is easy to understand and has clear directions about myself. Meanwhile, I had a look at others video. They preferred to record their daily life and had different styles with mine, but also grateful. Moreover, each person selected one post from the blog to evaluate it with group members and Mr. Brian.

To summarize, the main work in this work was to modify the videos and blogs for the first assessment and talked with each other in the group to gain some suggestions.
