It’s been 4 weeks now since the start of the new semester and my experience in the media studio system began. I talked about in my initial post, things that I was excited about and looking forward to in the Film 3 studio. One of the major things I talked about was cinematography and improving my ability with both camera knowledge, being able to set up shots and properly execute a vision and put it onto screen. In the first few weeks I’ve had the chance to work with the camera equipment we have at RMIT and experiment with different uses and areas for shooting. I’ve learnt a lot, and a major thing in fact is that I have a better knowledge and understanding of setting up and filming a nice shot that I gave myself credit for. I’ve been able to use the different aspects of the camera, from exposure to white balance to shot types etc, to go out a film nice looking, well put together shots. I’ve been able to surprise myself quite a bit so far with what I know, and am looking to keep improving my work quality every single time I get out there and have an opportunity to shoot. I think my knowledge of putting a shot together and what looks good comes from the shear amount of films that my generation watches, we know what looks good and doesn’t. So when I’m out there shooting I can look around and see what would look good and bad on screen. Plus taking the time to set it up right, looking at it again and again, plus having a technical knowledge of the camera, so the the colour balancing looks right, the exposure is on point and the focus is right. Helps me put the shot together of a high quality.
