week 11 movie review – Metropolis

This movie was directed by Fritz Lang in 1927. It has a very complicated ideology, but amazing and innovative. Perfectly combined elements such as, bourgeoisie sweatshop, anti-utopia, religious (Judaism Hexagram), robots, proletarian revolutionary and fascism as well as patriarchy.

Fritz Lang used these elements to demonstrate the relationship between worker and capitalist in a very exaggerate manner. Everything seems to be going well, however, the real conspiracy has not started yet…

Brigitte Helm is an excellent actress who, incisively and vividly expressed different characteristics of these two Maria. I dislike Freder,. Not only because of the stuff less role, but his performance (He is always too close to the fellow actors like he is going to kiss them.)

I like those scenes such as, the candle light in Maria’s hand that makes the silhouette of her twisted body reflected on the wall; the scene full of eyes and the synthesize moment of fake Maria. These are so avant-garde.

Somehow, I don’t like the ending. There are many anti-utopia elements in this movie, but Lang gave it a utopia style of ending. However, as a utopia ending this might be a bit too simple.

I think everyone will come out with different opinions. It is immortal and is one of great movie in the film history.
