What Was Left Unsaid by Bella De Almeida Reis, Ziggy Cross, and Qianyi Wang
What Was Left Unsaid tells the story of two ex-lovers as they reflect on their past relationship a couple of years after the break-up. Exploring unforgotten memories, past and current feelings, the characters articulate what they wish they said to one another during their time together. It’s only until this point that they have matured and grown to realise what’s best for them.
The film is told through two intercut monologues, with each character standing in front of live projections created using stock footage and TouchDesigner. The production of this film taught us all a lot about the process of finding, auditioning, and casting actors, as we spent a large portion of our time looking for the perfect fit for our two roles. We felt this was especially important due to the generic conventions of the Drama film, which usually is heavily dependent on good performances and emotive delivery of lines. It was also a great exercise in writing, refining, and editing a short length script, something which we did not have much experience with.
The whole duration of this films 2 week production cycle was packed with meetings, revisions, and late nights getting the smallest details ‘just right’, but the experience was incredibly rewarding, and gave us all much confidence for our future.
