For screen project two, I wanted to film something that both captured the essence/learning of the course and somehting that will be able to promote me on my career path. Though that seems obvious, it means that I want to film something that relates directly to my interests and where I want to end up in the Industry.

I like dystopias. I used to pretend that I was in a dystopian society (naturally kicking arse and working out how to bring down the society that everyone hates), and I’m also really drawn to darkness and the maverick.

One option – because I like looking at people who are not as they seem – if you look at someone on the streets you have no idea what their deal is – is to explore the POV of a character who, when they get home, is different to how they appear on the outside. It is likely that they have suffered trauma, so when they look at something (say a flower), they see it as dying/dead. Or covered in blood. I like this idea as it explores someone else’s POV and looks at their view, which differs from what is actual.

(though, this is similar to screen project one).

Another idea is to have the above, but from the POV of a kid, who hears nursery rhymes as something more sinister. The kid has grown up in WitSec and has seen traumatic things, and despite just wanting to be like their peers, is unable to have the same innocence.

On a side note, I find myself going back to the concept of innocence quite a lot.

I have also written a full length feature film, which needs another draft, but I am interested in starting to promote it. The film is set in a futuristic dystopian society where the gene pool is controlled by the government. Contraceptives are in the water, so the only way to have a child is to be approved.

And the society seems to be the perfect utopia, because there’s little in the way of illness and disability.

But, for those who do not have perfect genes… it is a dystopia.

There’s also quite a bit of set up as to how the society got to this point, so I was interested in looking at that… how the ‘United Sciences’ started doing gene therapy and how the public initially responded… though this is a very large project.

My final idea was also set in a dystopian society where young adults have to take a test, that basically measures their ethics and their will… those who fail, are cast aside.

The test consists of a series of tasks that aim to see how ‘good’ the person is… one of the tasks, being chose between a homeless man, a little girl and a convict and pick who to kill. Then, you have to watch moments of their lives…

I think all the ideas have their merits, though some will be unachievable in the time period (the one to promote my feature – too much narrative – and the one about WitSec – too many kids).

Which essentially brings it between the idea of following the person whose perception is different, or the test that does away with innocence.

Between the two, I think that the one that has the best ability to reach a wide range of people is the latter, as everyone has had a childhood, and by playing off the commonplace kids toys/things, most people will relate – rather than the person who is depressed.
