photography review

Recently I am always considering about what means the ‘sensation’ and how can I present this ‘sensation’, so I try to review some photographies and try to get the sensation and some inspirations from those photos.

This photograph is correctly exposed but still show a dark surrounding, and the bright two things can be seen clearly may be the main theme of this photo, it’s very interesting to use ‘contrast’ when shoot. The old lady is lying on the bed in the middle of the photograph, she can be seen as the protagonist in this photo. She is also staring at a table lamp with red light, however the table lamp is the brightest thing in the whole photo and catches the first attention of mine. The main dark atmosphere brings sadness and loneliness to the photo, and compares to the red colour — the representation of enthusiasm, active and young, which is the opposite of the main atmosphere and the old weak lady, thus the table lamp with red light may be the wishes or memories of her, and the contrast is not only about brightness but also the meaning.

The photographer of this photo is Martin Parr, he is a British. He has a saying of “In the States, there is a strong tradition of street photography; in the UK, we have the beach”, thus he may regard the beach as the place of freedom, then photography style is also lively and interesting. The colour of this photo is harmonious, blue and green are the main tone, which makes me feel relaxed, cool and has a summer feeling. Also Martin didn’t make every object appear clear in the photo, but the thing that lost focus was the most attractive to my eye in the photo, which is a man wearing a green funny hat, and another man was looking at him and feeling strange. This contrasting shooting technique makes me feel the photographer’s humour and creativity.

USA. NYC. 2017. Police in front of Trump Tower.

This is a portrait of a New York cop, the photographer shoot it in a close up way, and colour graded it to a dark, yellow and green tone. The whole photo gives a dim and gloomy feeling, the main tone of green also add a serious atmosphere in it. The photo seems to be low exposed because I barely see the cop’s eyes, however I think this is the most attractive point. The lighting in this photo works so well, the darkness around the cop’s eyes make me feel the heavy responsibility of her and I can see she seems to be very worried. I really love how photographer uses the light and dark to layer the things he wants to present.
