What is the definition of a good work for film production? I have been thinking about this question. I think the definition of a good work is diverse. I might regard it is a good work because of its good editing, good soundtrack and good scenes etc, however the music video I watched recently called ‘One Of These Nights’ made me realise that a good work may show its depth, will bring a lot of feelings and make people keep thinking after watching.
‘One Of These Nights’ is considered to be satirical South Korea’s famous Sewol tragedy, a lot of scenes in the music video are reflecting this.
The paper boats appear in the mv and teaser are seen as the symbol of the mourning after the Sewol incident.
The parallelism between the door and the sea level means that the ship is overturned, and the surrounding water is getting higher and higher, indicating that the ship is about to sink and the girl is going to die.
The increasing rain indicates the danger of the situation, the black out of the scene shows that the girl gradually lost her hope.
I am shocked by these scenes and the meaning behind it. In this music video it uses a lot of metaphors to express the dark meanings, also the slow rhythm of the whole video matches the gradual process of the shipwreck. I’m so amazed by that the whole video tells the story of sadness in a very concealed way, however still give a powerful effect in both visual and spiritual, and I really want to use the ‘metaphor’ in my future work.
