Before my shoot with Megan I was incredibly nervous and did everything I could to prepare for the day. I looked over her site with all her artwork again to refresh my mind and help me to think of some interesting interview questions. With everything sorted the crew and I jumped in the car and headed down to Werribee. Much to my relief we were on schedule and arrived 10 minutes early. However upon unloading the equipment and discussing what I had hired with the crew, I discovered that I had made a mistake with the sound equipment. I thought I could hire radio mics and attach them to the camera but as we were using DSLRs with no attachment, this was not the case. It turns out I needed to hire a zoom to connect the radio mics. Despite this hiccup we resolved to use a phone to record the sound.
We were greeted by Megan at her home and she led us to her studio out the back. I was pleasantly surprised to walk into her studio and find her artwork set up beautifully and showered in sunlight provided by a large round window. I decided to shoot her in front of the window and have the natural light act as a back light. Therefore we only used one LED and this combination lit her face from the side nicely. The interview went incredibly well as Megan was very open with us and willing to share intimate details of her career. At times I deviated from my set questions to explore details about her life and art. After the interview I asked Megan for her permission to film her making one of her pieces at some stage. She was very generous and offered to work on one of her pieces then and there. She beaded a portrait of her grandfather and we were able to get a variety of shots of her sewing. Megan also had many boxes of beads laid out on her table which made for some amazing shots. After the shoot I left Megan’s very excited to see how the footage turned out.
At this stage I’m working on getting in contact with Megan’s close friend and colleague Maree Clarke for an interview on Megan. Im also beginning my editing process.
