Prior to class I had been thinking a lot about the process of leaning something new-whether it be for a job or for a new found passion etc. The idea of learning a new skill is very intriguing to me as it can open up a whole new world and alter the way we once perceived that skill. This made me think back to my mundane week of work experience back in 2012. I was working in a cafe/sandwich shop and soon discovered that it was not as simple as it seemed. The tasks I was presented with were very simple ones but had been altered to cater for limited space and to meet health and safety standards. I had made a sandwich at home plenty of times and there had been little drama. However, at the shop I had to wear one large awkward plastic glove, layer fillings and condiments in a certain order, handle money with my free hand and make the sandwich in an impossibly tiny space. I remember the difficulties of trying to put together an order with my gloved non-preferred hand whilst trying not to touch it with my bare hand. Finally after the ordeal was over, I had to add up the cost of the monstrosity I had slung together. Whilst in no way did I enjoy my cafe experience, it did open my eyes to the rigid world of hospitality. This lead me to relay my ordeal to the class but more importantly tell them about the phenomenon of learning something new. Whilst I have little inclination to film sandwich making this activity did get me thinking about making exercises revolving around the journey of learning something new.

working in hospitality really humbles you, specially when you’re at a cafe/restaurant and food is taking too long or something haha.

Yeah I couldn’t agree more, it really does teach you patience and understanding
