In this week’s Media 1 class we set out to use the RMIT cameras in preparation for our next project. The task was simple enough, we had to shoot two people meeting, acknowledging one another and then moving on. One shot would be still, another hand held and lastly one would incorporate camera movement such as a panning etc. As I’m not very tech savvy, I was slightly relieved to hear that we would be using automatic settings. Setting white balance and shutter speed had always been an arduous task for me in the past. However as it had been a while since I’d gotten my hands on a professional camera, it was good to get back into it. Setting the composition of my shot, timing the movement and ensuring that subjects entered and exited the frame took a few takes to get right. However the thrill of also trying something spontaneous and having it turn out successfully ignited something in me that made me want to take this course in the firs place. Purely and simply, i enjoyed the creation process of film and both the learning and relearning that came with it.
It amazed me to see how the different shots we had created felt as if they held different meaning just by simply changing up the camera shot and adding in some movement. One particular shot taken by a classmate of mine gives the simple event a somewhat dramatic feel and its almost as if time has stood still when the two meet.
