The Female Spectator: Deconstructing Noir

Who is the female spectator?
The femme fatale?
The killer woman?

There exists a constructed place for women in film, in which their contributions have been obscured by the shadow of the Hollywood studio system and its imperial monopoly over Cinema. A noir curtain that cloaks their achievements; their identities depicted and dictated through the lens of man, the great auteurs.

The Female Spectator confronts the cynicism of Hollywood and “The Golden Era,” and the predicated gender constructs of Cinema since its inception, namely in women’s representation in the “genre” that is Film Noir.

An experimental audio-visual essay critiquing the patriarchal institutions of Cinema whilst re appropriating its lauded canonical greats, using the most beloved Film Noir/Neo-Noir films. A re-framing of each narrative, expressed through a multi-layered mix of found-footage, original footage, music/scores and spoken dialogue.
