Film/TV1 – Reflection & Analysis 2 – Question 4
In 300 words or less describe what you thought worked or didn’t. At this stage we don’t expect you to have a great deal of film knowledge or language. Don’t be afraid to use your own words. Things you could talk about – script, casting, timing, camera movement, location. You may not remember much detail, if so, it could be helpful to talk about your first impressions, after all this is what most of us are left with after one viewing.
As the question suggests, I am going to have to answer this off my first impression, as we did watch this film a number of weeks ago.
Overall, I really liked this film as a short film. It wasn’t too complicated – actually, it was very straight forward and easy to follow – easy to create and present.
From what I remember, I did like the camera movement and angles – I don’t believe they were tragically horrible, after all if they were I would think I would remember them (I would hope so anyway)!
Another aspect that I really liked about the film was that it had a simple ending; that wasn’t totally unbelievable or too far fetched.
However, there were a few things that I didn’t like so much, or more so didn’t sit really well with me.
I thought the students ability to be able to gain access to a supermarket was very impressive, however the fact that it seemed to be predominately Asian supermarket (that is stocking asian ingredients etc) threw me off a little bit. (I’m not saying that these people couldn’t shop or work there though! It was just my first thoughts. It made me remember that this wasn’t a real life event, but only a set up film, and perhaps this was all they could gain access to).
The casting I didn’t love or hate. I thought they played their roles well, however as I said, I didn’t overly enjoy it either. Again, at times I was broken out of the story and reminded that it was only a student film.
The last thing I have to talk about (which I hate doing because overall I actually really liked the film), was the ending. While it wasn’t totally unbelievable, I feel as though it could have been a stronger ending if it had of finished with romeo (the guy) just sitting in his room of toilet paper. I think the additional scene of the girl coming to his apartment was a little bit too much, and personally I would have found it more amusing if the guy had have failed in his pursuing of his love interest.
