How did you author the video you recorded for upload to Instagram?
I authored this video as I was travelling down the escalators at work. I think this video truly captures Norman’s quote that ‘good design is a lot harder to notice, in part because it fits our needs so well that the design is invisible (Norman 2008, p.1). I use this escalator every day at work, as do hundreds of employees. If this escalator breaks, it disrupts many people and can be extremely frustrating. But, when it works, we almost take for granted the ease of promptly getting to our destination.
I recorded this video on my iPhone 7 and this time wanted to try out the Instagram camera within the app. I placed the camera about chest height and recoded myself travelling down. As you can tell by the video, many different people use this object, including maintenance, croupiers, and security guards. I love how everyone is walking in different directions too, and this is a great representation of the chaos of working at Crown. This video was a one take shot, because I didn’t have time to go all the way back up to come down again; but I am happy with the result.
To edit the video I just used the classic Aden filter, and set it to 50. I also chose the thumbnail photo to be a shot with all three employees in it. I muted it because the white noise was drowning it out.

How did you publish the video you recorded for upload to Instagram?
I published the video with a simple caption ‘Another Day at Crown Casino’ because I didn’t feel like I needed to justify what was already in the post. I used three hashtags #shiftwork #escalator #crowncasino. As a result I got one like!
Interesting to note that the quality of the video deteriorated immensely from the time I uploaded it to my account, so apologies for that.
How did you distribute the video you recorded for upload to Instagram?
As usual, I distributed the video on Facebook and Twitter. Again, Twitter just posted the link so I ended up deleting the tweet and republishing it with the actual video as well as the link to my Instagram. The auto cross distribution between Instagram and Twitter feels not thought out, and the fact that I have to go in and repost every.single.time defies the point of it to begin with.
During publication, I was going to add a location to distribute, but I may get in trouble from work so I decided to leave it. I kept the caption the same on all social media platforms.
