Class 1: An Introduction

Day one marks the first class of Networked Media for Summer 2020. I was initially interested in this elective due to the fact that we would be writing continual blog entries. As a third year Public Relations student, I am no stranger to writing. I wanted to try this class because I believe I would gain valuable blog writing skills and expand upon my understanding on philosophical social networking discussions.

I’m used to blogging, but only in a Tumblr sense, never in regards to personal reflection through words; so we will have to see what comes out of this.

As blog making isn’t something that I have ever delved into, I am glad that I can slowly work on these skills and not be forced to be a professional coder or UI expert by the end of the four weeks.

In regards to our first class, and to my surprise, the course is not just about creating and executing a working blog. Elaine mentioned that the entire course will be based off a specific prompt that we will constantly reference and learn from throughout the four week period.

In our first lecture, we spoke about the importance of distinguishing professional and personal use of social networking services and how we will critically analyse this through the course. It was interesting to reflect upon my own SNS use. This made me consider questions such as why do I use it and consider how societal norms have pushed me onto certain platforms.
