First day of the second week and we are straight into a new topic: editing. Now I am not a person who typically enjoys editing but I love to see a finished, well done, end product. Jeremy (a former student of Media) was discussing the importance of editing, how it is about holes and spaces between gaps, combining parts to create new meaning and sometimes fixing and other times breaking a scene. The complete turning point for me was when Jeremy showed the clip from ‘Casino’ (1995).

Having never seen the movie turned out to be a real benefit, because i could very clearly see how the editing pretty much made the scene. There is such a juxtaposition between Sam and Ginger, the quick cuts showing the differences between them; De Niro stony faced and Sharon Stone carefree, the quick cuts implicating that there is a sense of electricity between them. The editing is able to communicate so much about their relationship in that small 30 second moment where Ginger throws the chips in the air, yet neither of them has spoken to one another; the story being told mainly through their eye contact and the rhythm drawing you in. Not only did the editing in this scene make me eager to see the entire movie, it shed a new light on the way that there is a certain beauty in editing.

Definitely have a new found appreciation for editing now.
