Keep it Class-y

Attending what I later found out, was the second last media tutorial for this semester proved to be both a fruitful and painful venture.

Having recently hi the studio to record the technology script, I was deep in editing mode during class. I had been editing out all the profanities that Bianca managed to expel during our session and trimming down all the pauses to congeal the dialogue into something that could be presented.

After showing the work-in-progress to Rachel, I managed to encounter a situation that all those who edit fear… my computer crashed… without me backing up my work. This middle finger to the face meant that the previous hours worth of work was flushed down the proverbial drain.

I did manage to calm my tits just long enough to re-edit approx %20 of what was lost before packing it up, packing it in and letting it begin.

This did prove to highlight the importance of saving ones work and also the necessity to stay calm.

This is the Word of Rachel

Thats Life : 13-05-15

After submitting the practice components to Project Brief 3 several weeks ago & now firmly surprising it to the back of my mind while I focus on more pressing matters, I was surprised to receive the feedback / mark for it today.

Having received a grade of 65/100 I was both happy and unsatisfied with the result. My happiness drew from the fact that I had passed the assessment and that other people felt the portrait was palatable. My displeasure drew from the fact that I had poured so much time and effort into the artefact to only receive a grade that I was not happy with…that is not to say that it wasn’t a fair grade, for who am I (as an undergraduate student) to pass such judgment.

The comments received in conjunction with the grade proved to be the most influential part of the assessment and the part that I will draw from in future projects. I feel that Rachel gave an appropriate judgment of the piece, especially in regards to the framing of the shots, as this was one area I was unsure about.

With some reworking and reformatting of ideas, I feel that in a few projects time I will be able to produce a piece that both I and my contemporaries are happy with.

Flashback

Arriving to the Thursday afternoon tutorial 15 minutes early left me utterly bored…which, gave me a perfect opportunity write this post. Sitting in this room, by myself, prompted my mind to flash back to last weeks lesson.

A non-enjoyable experience to say the least.

Shit Son!

After attending the tutorial last week, a somewhat too familiar thought entered my head, I am further behind than I thought I was.

Having Rachel inform us that we had a 1,200 word annotated bibliography due in exactly 1 week, not to mention the plethora of other work due in differing subjects, I naturally began to chant the mental incantation of “oh shit, oh shit, oh shit”.

This did serve to put a metaphorical firework up my sphincter and initiated was has been a highly productive few days. Having now completed the bibliography and gained a clearer vision on where the group assignment should head, as well as gaining further advances in other subjects, I feel that everything is back on track.

Or as the gods like to put it –

Baby Got (feed) Back.

After presenting the Media Portrait for assessment in front of the whole cute, we then had to show it to our select small groups and critique each others work.

The feedback I received from my peers was generally quite positive and reinforced some ideas that I had about the media piece. The only negative aspect that was highlighted about the media artefact was the inaudibility of my Nonnas accents. This is something that I thought to address, however I felt that if I added in subtites to the piece, this would have detracted from the whole feel.

Grin & Bare It

Having finished the Media Self Portrait and forgetting its very existence, I was alarmingly surprised to learn that the task for our week 5 tutorial was to present our piece to our contemporaries.

Seeing both my metaphorical ‘self’ on the screen and having my physical self in the same room, projected in front of a class of 20 people, was a nerve-racking experience that ultimately proved highly rewarding. By having my peers cast their views on the way I was portraying myself via a piece of media enabled me to better come to terms with critique and helped fuel my inner desires.

I can categorically say that I will still dread every time that this will happen, although now I will welcome it as a means of further improving both my technical skills in editing and a way to come to terms with critique.

Please Mind The Gap

Upon reflection of this weeks ideas – that the power of editing comes from the connotations that develop from the space in between two images (clips) – I have begun to formulate a soft theory of my own.

There is a common perception of modern art  that everything is a remix; there is no original work or idea, rather just different variations of a common theory (concept).

I believe that due to this fact (that everything is a remix) society has become conditioned to think in uniform ways and expect a certain result from specific stimuli. This, in my opinion, may explain why most audiences are able to grasp the ‘implied’ messages that formulate in the space between two images (cuts).

Further investigation to this idea is required.

TRANSITIONS

1. Cuts (straight/contrast/graphic matching/ jump cut)

2. Disolve (Fade down one shot & Fade up another shot)

3. Fade up from black / Fade to black / Flash frame of white

4. Wipes

After the messages of this weeks Lectorial managed to cement themselves into my patterns of thinking for the week, I had come in to todays Tutorial with an intrigued mind. Having had just been explained about the power of the edit and the connotations that can be drawn from excluding certain shots / aspects of a production, I had one compelling thought that was driving my intrigue.

There is a common theory that ‘everything is a remix’, that is, there is no original idea anymore, rather just different variations of the same theme. This theory may explain why most audiences are able to pick up / explain the implied messages between shots. Having seen the same ideas presented to them in differing variations, audiences have become conditioned to these themes and therefore know what is about to come.

This concept wasn’t addressed during the Tutorial and therefore I feel that I will have to investigate further in my own learner directed hours. Food for thought.

Practice Practical

THU – 5th – MARCH

This was the day that the first practical for Media commenced.

The objective of this practical was to further introduce both the class and the teaching faculty for the subject, as well as to gain some familiarity with our new websites and blogs. Which you are currently reading. Right Now. (Insert appropriate ‘Inception’ music).

The session managed to progress quite rapidly, as the practical aspect ran smoothly. With only minor technical difficulties arising we managed to finish ahead of the expected scheduled 3:30pm.

This is not to say that, at times, the session felt like it was dragging on.

Due to it being the start of the new semester, all the different unions were positioned outside the building fighting over the new kids like vultures on a dead carcass to gain their loyalty for the year. This feast of new flesh was soundtracked by an array of differing pop songs that managed to repeat itself three times.. There is only so many times that a person can listen to ‘Uptown Funk’ before they start to question their own sanity, let alone notice the clock starting to move slower.
