Project Brief 2 Question 1
This reminds me during week one of the studio where we collaborated our ideas to create a continuous scene from “I’ll Wait For The Next One”. It was an interesting experience because, in week one, we were still strangers with one another. When we collaborated there were a mixed of agreeing and disagreeing with certain ideas. There were times where we doubted each other ideas because it was not going according to that person’s flow of idea. In Cleese’s talk, he mentioned that when we collaborate it is better to have “play friends and people that you like and trust” (Cleese, 27:49 mins, 1991). Having said that, we were grouped together with new people whom we were not sure we can openly trust with our ideas. Despite this, we were able to throw in our ideas around the table regardless if the idea was taken into the final story.
Notably, we gave each other time to explain and reason out why it was a good idea to have that particular scene or extra character in there. When we were throwing ideas back and forth there was this constant direction that we all went. We started to think about that one idea or genre which was revenge. Our ideas grew towards a darker direction which we unconsciously agreed on. At first, we started with a simple revenge, however; it ended up with having a non-existent sister who psyches the protagonist to take revenge on the sketch artist. I did not expect in addition of characters to play around with and going into extreme dark places of the world such as having a psychotic sister who did not exist in the first place. It was all in the protagonist mind. It made me realised that in a group, we help to expand each other imaginations. I then questioned myself why did I not think of this and how this idea sounds impossible to possible. When I am in my own world there are things that I do not see or realise. So when these ideas are being thrown to me, I start to enter into unknown territories which at first may scare me but the adrenaline and anxiety excite me to explore a new side of the world. I gain a new knowledge from my fellow classmates. Thus, having a group of people sharing ideas is always a good idea especially when you discover something in common and able to agree on this particular flow of a story. It is definitely not my first time collaborating with a group but it always surprised me the ideas that we throw to each other because we will then gather the ideas, remix it and it becomes something great.
In conclusion, sharing ideas with someone or in a group is always a good idea to improve your creativity and expand beyond your imagination. Even if your plan gets refuted I feel that you must not give up in justifying that idea and which that idea could be something that the team could build on. Thus, we must be open and accepting to new ideas.
