Another World: Reflection #1

In Wednesday’s class, we discussed the different worlds and how the context would be if it was placed in a different setting. However, what interests me was the gender-flipped where roles are reversed. It is interesting to look at it in this perspective especially when we have a set of rules for that specific gender and when this cycle is disrupted; it messes with what we believed in. I will be analysing this shows based on the trailers. For example, Sex and the City (2008) revolve around four women who are facing social issues such as sex, femininity and relationships in New York City. However, if the roles were to change to four men with the similar problems I think it could work. The men could be living lavishly and be discussing their own social problems. This would also mean that the audience has shifted. The female audience may find it weird that men are discussing such problems but to men, it could be a normal thing that they face that women do not know about.

A similar concept would be the film Entourage (2015). Entourage is about Vincent Chase, an A-list star and his childhood friends exploring the unfamiliar territory of Los Angeles. Chase and his friends are all males. In the trailer, scenes of them enjoying wealth such as having parties at the house and boat could reflect how men spend wealth unlike women as shown in Sex and the City where they spent it on branded bags and clothes. Also, in Entourage, we get to see how the male counterpart feels about having a relationship whereas, in Sex and the City we view it from a women perspective. From a woman perspective, I feel that we usually think that when a man voices their opinion on a relationship they sound like a douche bag. When a female audience watches Entourage or imagining Sex and the City male version, we feel disconnected because of our ideal values on this specific gender. However, such films actually allow us to understand and view from another perspective. These are just a few similar scenes that I feel could work if Sex and the City character gender is flipped. Thus, I feel that a male version of Sex and the City can happen since there are movies that are changing that stigma such as the recent Ghostbusters (2016).
