I do apologise that I’ve done this blog post last minute (sorry for joining the last minute squad Ruth!). We spent the start of the class, going through the reading and watching examples of comedy news episodes.
This studio gave the entire class the chance to pitch their idea from the first assignment. There were a wide variety of ideas and all of them newsworthy in their own way, from Kat Von D wanting to raise a vegan baby (which I was honestly shocked about) to a Twitter debate about the Thai boys stuck in the cave. Some pieces were comedic off the bat, others were probably dry (in my opinion) but they were all ideas. My idea is here, which is about Kim Jong-un and his life growing up before he became the Supreme Leader of North Korea. The reason I picked that was because I couldn’t find any news within Australia that I found appealing or struck an interest within me.
After each person summarised their article, Ruth set up a Google poll with all the submissions of the class. We were given the chance to pick who we would like to work with but I don’t think anybody took that chance so we’re randomly delegated into groups of 3 or 4. I voted for the following articles: Freddogate, Vegans vs. Vaccines, the tweet about the Thai divers. I think we could only vote for 3 or 4 (can’t remember actually.) The reason I voted was because I wanted to research more into something else and potentially create something amusing for the final assignment. But in the end, I was placed with my article, which was the early life of Kim Jong-Un. This is a very sought-after story for me with much to discuss. The possibilities are never ending. Whatever challenges and obstacles that myself or my group members face, I am determined to push through and am fully determined to work throughout the rest of the studio.
