Marrissa and I had a few options as to which site to capture for Project 2. We had to take into consideration a place that was easily accessible to both of us as well as places that we both felt were visually and conceptually appropriate. We narrowed down our options to two places that we visited.
I brought along my digital and analogue camera to get a good sense of the site. This allow me to explore both sites in different ways.
One was the roof top of federation square which is a car park that has now been converted into a pop up veggie patch that people rent to grow veggies. This was an interesting place to capture as originally could have been considered a non place as it was a car park. Now with the veggie patch the so called non place became a place. We visited this site and captured some images.
We then decided to go to the Nicholas building to explore that place and capture some footage. This building had so many options in terms of where we could take our project conceptually. We explored the upper floors that seemed unoccupied and run down, which is what appealed to us both. We both had already begun crafting our projects the second we entered the building and thats when we knew we had made our decision as to which site to use for our assessment.
Although we chose the Nicholas building as the site to capture, the pop up patch provided me with some great footage and it would be a waste to not share the footage. The images that are shown are all analogue.
While taking the images of the pop up patch I wanted to juxtapose the left side, which was the car park, to the right side, which was occupied by the pop up patch. Through the images of the pop up patch I attempted to draw the relationship to the car park. It challenged the idea of place vs. non place and if a non place can really exist.
