Project Brief #3 Reflection

For Project Brief 3 I was a bit unsure at first because we were basing it around another individual. I wasn’t sure who to ask at first. My Mum and Brother were my first picks but it didn’t work out. However, my brother suggested my cousin, Andy, and it went from there. Andy was very happy to help, and being a media/film person he helped a lot with ideas and making my video the best it could be. Fatherhood was the first thing that came to mind when thinking about what my focus should be. Being a Dad for the first time with his 10 month old baby, Stella, I thought it would be something to start with.

Most of the time I was thinking, “Is this good? Should I ask this question? No this could be better.” One of the main reasons I wanted my video to be better than my last was because it was all about someone I know and not myself, so I felt a lot more pressure for it to be perfect.

During the filming process I wasn’t sure when to start when I turned up, but straight away Andy told me to start filming as he was feeding Stella. He helped with what angles would be best and making sure the lighting was right. It definitely made the filming process a lot easier. Stella loves the camera so we found no issues getting great footage of them together. They’re both very natural in front of the camera which is exactly the vibe I wanted because their relationship is one of the key focuses of the video.

In Week 6 we talked about narrative and during my reflection in my tutorial I realized I was missing a few things and my structure needed to be moved around. I had already done my filming and interview so I had to work with what I had. I think next time I’ll make sure from the beginning that I have a more solid structure before I get my content, to make sure I’m getting everything I need. I have definitely realised that it’s better to get more footage than you need, than not enough.

I’m starting to get used to the new editing software which is definitely helping to make the process a lot quicker and easier. However, I’m sure there are a lot more features and tools that I can use that will make my projects a lot better. Progress wise, I’m happy with where I’m at, but there’s still a lot of skills I have to build upon and that will take time.
