Authoring_Week9_”Instagram Image”

How did you author (the photo or video) you recorded for upload to Instagram?

The device used for this photo was my VIVO NEX S, using the rear dual camera with 12MP (24 million photosensitive units) + 5MP, 4-axis Optical Image Stabilizer, aperture for the main rear camera is 1.8, and for the secondary rear camera is 2.4. This photo, together with the video I posted were taken in my current residence with my landlord Sunny. The editing software is Snapseed by Google LLC, I decolourized the photo and added the ‘Lens Blur’ effect to it, aiming to make this photo to have a ‘centre of focus’. I was annoyed by the size limits of Instagram that stopped me posting the photo in its original size, however, I need to admit, the restricted size fits the whole UI design of Instagram better.

How did you publish (the photo or video) you recorded for upload to Instagram?

I had stored 5 versions of this photo, from colourized to decolourized, strong-contrast to weak-contrast, by sliding and go through them over and over again (also had some peeking at the dashboard, where everyone with their work posted on the timeline — excitingly there’s not much black-and-white photos), I decided to post the black-and-white one with higher contrast. I uploaded the final decision on Instagram with the same phone I used for taking this photo (VIVO NEX S) within 4 clicks (excluding writing captions), the actual publishing process only took less than 1 minute.

How did you distribute (the photo or video) you published on Instagram to other social media services?

I was trying to make this post on Instagram as a test-run, hence there’s no other distribution on other social media service for this photo.

Reclamation (on 31 May): I went through the criteria of the post on this, and I had noticed that the distribution must be made to more or equal to 2 social media platform.

While I was considering how to remedy this post, I came up with another thought: Twitter users sometime re-twitted their post to remind their new followers of their previous works, to show the contents they would like to present to the public again and keep their followers interested, (also not to be drowned by massive contents in their followers’ feeds)

That kind of distributing strategy might also work for me — by thinking of this, I post this Instagram content to my Twitter:

And also the Tumblr

It is interesting that even both of these shares are done by one-click in Instagram, Twitter didn’t automatically include the photo itself. I would consider that Twitter is more text-based social media platform while Tumblr is more visual-based, hence Tumblr would show more affordance of distributing Instagram contents, while it keeps more compatibility (visual-based social media platform) with Instagram.
