This week I got my Super 8 footage back. It is a medium I have always wanted to explore and finally have the opportunity. I filmed a local lake to get reflections of water. During filming I was enamoured with the lens flares that appeared. I used this assignment as an opportunity to experiment with the in-built filter and the accidental/serendipitous nature of the Super 8 camera. Liv suggested I film water because it is reflective and harder to place. I also appreciated the connection/disconnect between a projection of water onto sand we will get from the beach.
Super 8 is an incredibly nostalgic medium “Its role at the top end of production is more usually as home movie footage and/or to evoke pastness.” (Thomas, 2009) I thought the use of Super 8 in our project would be good to evoke hazy memories of our dead planet, and transport the audience from RMIT to Codae. I plan to completely warp the image and make the film neon pink, purple and blue to reflect the colour palette of Codae.
I must consider how my teammates work will be shown in conjunction with my projection—I want it to add to the museum experience and not be the focus. Our propaganda posters and art will be brightly coloured which should balance the film nicely but I worry it will take up too much room because it will be brightly coloured.
