Deconstructing Federation Square Assignment #2

Link to mood reel

My aim was to make a mood reel that felt nostalgic, bright and playful that can be consumed passively.

I slowed down ‘Here comes the sun’ by The Beatles because I plan to record a slow, peaceful, synth track using the same chords in a different way. This song reminds me of being outside, enjoying the world as a young person and will be heard throughout the square.

I used clips from Submarine by Richard Ayoade because of how stark the shots in the film are, like a series of photos, and the nostalgia it evokes—I included ‘Morningtown ride’ by The Seekers for the same reasons. I used ‘Riptide’ by Vance Joy that showed the outdoors to show freedom in the mundane—the shot of the woman running and the lime were close-up shots that represent a broadening world. My plan for filming is the most successful part of this assessment because I have a strong plan of what to capture.

I included paint swatches, and a hand-drawn triangle because I want to animate triangles into everyday objects such as tree branches, windows and power lines to represent remembering while moving forward—reflecting the ‘future’ brief from Fed Square. The use of triangles came from a joke my cousins and I made about Fed Square when we were kids which is in line with the ‘Anything but square’ brand. I am concerned about this because I have never animated anything before—but I’m eager to learn and think it will be the element that gives my work a narrative. I am most worried about the text I want to include in my final work because of the limitations set by Fed Square.
