Deconstructing Federation Square Research

The research I undertook for my work was to look at two articles from World Records Journal.

A line from Ways of organizing: Present Time stuck out to me as a way to approach my work “The present is a kind of consciousness, not a spectacle” (Muracciole, 2022). This is an important thing to consider because I am exploring the aftermath of a loved one dying and what it is like to live without them. The article goes on to say that film is an experience which made me consider what I want the experience of my work to be. I don’t necessarily want it to be uplifting because grief is not uplifting—it is uncomfortable and hopeful in equal measure. I want my work to reflect my grief but also show the peace and hope and laughter in it.

The other article, Ways of organizing: “what’s good is not what’s really good” was interesting to me because De Cuir Jr considers the stories that get told at his exhibitions and showcases. We don’t acknowledge grief and the pain that can come with growing up. I want to honour these emotions because I feel this story often goes untold in Australia—because it is uncomfortable and generally unprofitable. The quote “what’s good is not what’s really good, only that which is profitable to be considered as such” (De Cuir Jr, 2022) was important to me because it is not very often we get to create for a public space with relative freedom. I am excited to begin production for this reason (among many others).
